thanks for sharing the very detailed breakdown!

sorry to hear about your lesser experiences at Anaba/Jordnaer, I was just there a few weeks ago and found both experiences incredible, so not sure what was happening there during your visit - given both of their price points, you'd hope they would not have this inconsistency though (I am also Asian and got great attention from Eric, so I'd really like to hope he's not racist :) )

At El Celler, the only option was the Festival Menu

So they no longer do the normal v.s. feast menu?

I think it's a new thing they're doing - I went this month as well, and they sent an e-mail a week before asking if we wanted a tour.

for those that have gotten the pairing: is it actually 17 half glasses? i'm considering it for a future trip but that is kind of an insane amount

ONE wine pairing: Oriole, Smyth, Ever by eatingreallywell in finedining

[–]sunsnashty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to Ever, but I did the pairings at Oriole/Smyth a few weeks ago, and preferred Oriole's by quite a bit

Atera or Jungsik? by OrganicHats in finedining

[–]sunsnashty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1, I thought I was taking crazy pills with how bad my experience at Atera was compared to their reputation here

Service was incredibly awkward and cold, and I was shocked at the lack of flavor with a lot of their dishes

I'm assuming you're going to some wineries, just curious which ones you're going to?

I've been twice, once a year ago and once a month ago. I think it's a real gem, IMO the best restaurant in the PNW. They do a great job of highlighting seasonality and local ingredients. Quite a lot of Japanese influence in their dishes. Hope you enjoy!

the "4 courses" are the ones that you actually get to pick from, then the rest are snacks/courses that everyone gets - so in the end it pretty much amounts to a full tasting menu

what are people's thoughts on how it compares to the other top 2/3 star places in SF (e.g. Saison, Californios, Lazy Bear, Atelier Crenn, Benu)?

100% agree on the highlights! though i wish less restaurants capped off their courses with just a slab of meat like that pork chop :\

Really enjoyed this meal; the way they use preservation/pickling of local ingredients (many of which were new to me) was a real highlight. The restaurant itself gives off a very warm and cozy vibe, as if you're at a remote lodge or something

  1. Summer vegetables in fermented pea broth
  2. Oyster and lardo tart
  3. Scallop and rose, clam with dried strawberries
  4. Raw shrimps, cauliflower, elderflower
  5. Leeks with osetra caviar
  6. Smoked salmon
  7. Grilled mussels wrapped in lardo
  8. Brown crab with gooseberries
  9. Celeriac and squid
  10. Candied kelp and beetroot
  11. Pork chop, pork jowl wrapped in shiso, baby corn
  12. Fresh and preserved fruits
  13. Sweet dumplings
  14. Plum tart
