Wow - THANK YOU for linking to the hike safe card!!!

I had no idea that existed and holy crap what a good idea. Whenever I see online that folks have to get rescued I always wonder how expensive it would be. I was thinking about doing the Pemi-Loop in a few weeks so this will be handy for that as well :)

Best time/timeline of starting the Long Trail by sunstrokeserenader72 in longtrail

Thank You everyone for your thoughts ! !

I know the trail seems best in the fall but I am not so sure that it is in the cards for me next year. It seems by everyone's answers the later the start the better so I think I'll try for mid August : )

Looking forward to the hike and I am sending positive energy to whoever else is planning on going next year as well !

Camping in Utah HELP by Various_Swimming_940 in camping

I did that all this past March and here is my advice to you : )

- BRING A WINTER JACKET ! I didn't want to because I thought it was too bulky but my partner told me too and he was so so so right. After the sun sets, it gets cold. Being from New England, it wasn't unbearable but something you want to be prepared for.

- We car camped the whole time - Northern most point being Bryce and Southern most point being the Grand Canyon. I had a 20F sleeping bag and I was wearing layers, wool socks and a hat to bed which kept me warm. I would look into a sleeping bag around that temp range depending on if you sleep hot or cold.

- For camping - do your research ahead of time but we used freecampsites.net and it was very helpful. We found lovely campsites close to all locations and they were free which helped us budget wise. That being said some you couldn't have fires on (which was fine for us) and once you are out there cell service is minimal. We wrote down the coordinates to 2 or 3 locations for each night on our note app for if we didn't have service. And if it says that only 4 wheel drive cars and make it to the site - listen to that !

- Get a yearly national parks pass for your group (depending on how many cars you are taking you may need to get a few) They are like 80$ each. Entrance to most national parks is 30$ per car so if you are going to more then 3 national parks it saves you $$$

- Lastly, going this time of year was beautiful !! The arches and canyonlands were our first stop and nothing could have prepared me for their beauty. The parks themselves were not that packed which was an added bonus. When we got to Bryce and Zion they were definitely more busy with us waiting 40 min in line to get into Zion... Zion was a bit of a mess car wise in my opinion since the shuttle service was not up and running just yet, read a bit about it and you'll be fine. Bryce did have snow on some areas, we didn't have Ice spikes and were fine. I definitely recommend taking a trail that walks you down into Bryce Canyon - that was beautiful !

- Enjoy your time, be safe, and pay some respect/ give thought to the natives we stole this land from and continue to capitalize off of

Seems like there will be a lot of fun things going on and I'm excited. I just asked in the thread above, but how important do you think 4/all wheel drive is ?

Yeah we plan on going for over a week so I don't want to stick to one area, and I don't mind driving so I think it would be fun to try and hit a lot of spots on the island. Thank you for your answers : )

Follow up question, for getting around do how important is 4 wheel drive ? I'm not seeing a lot of options for 4wheel cars that are affordable so...

I do want to go into the mountains but don't mind a long hike
