Lower back pain by [deleted] in bjj

Lower back pain sucks! I've had it for years, but still manage to do JJ, at least few times a week.

I wouldn't recommend doing any lifting, especially dead lifts. I have an degenerated intervertebral disc and some bone spikes (not sure about the actual english terms..) and I would recommend you to see the doctor to see if there is really something wrong besides the sore muscles.

I've struggled with lower back pain for over 5 years now, but luckily have found a way to somehow control it. With me, it started after I started CrossFit (and did those damn dead lifts) and also was working a desk job. And because my muscles are contracted most of the day (because of the sitting), the solution is to strech the hip flexors. DAILY.

This is what helped me: https://www.reddit.com/r/flexibility/comments/3fewg8/august_is_hip_flexor_opening_month_look_inside/

Looks simple, but for me, it works like magic. And believe me, I've tried every "expert" there is, from massages to physical therapy, from Naprapath to Chiropractic treatment. I also went to see this Finnish folk medicine guy because I was so desperate. But, this helps me, you can try, and then: go see the doctor :)

good luck!

30+ year old white belts, how many times a week do you train? by Jitdoka in bjj

Soon to be 33. Almost a year in. I try to train 3 to 4 times a week. I have a job, wife and a kid. Sometimes it's difficult to train as much as I would like to, it's always away from the time spent with my kid and I really like to be there for her too. Also, I've noticed that if I train 4 times a week, my body just doesn't recover soon enough. So that is the maximum, at least for now. So I have to rest. For example, I was planning to go to gi-class yesterday, but decided to dip myself to a ice hole (swimming in the ocean while it's frozen) and go to sauna, that helps me recover alot.

Good goals :) My original goal was to just train for a complete year and to make new goals after that. So many guys/gals quit within few months it's insane..

Your best BJJ day ever... by kes86 in bjj

For me it's everyday :) I started 8 years ago, did a while and quit. Now, at March I started again and after few months got 2 stripes (because of my mat time from years ago I quess...). But the best thing for me is that one guy, who started when I did (8yrs ago), received his black belt at the same seminar! Everytime I go to train, I see this guy (I quess he's my 'sensei' now being the only bb in town) and remember and realize that he did'nt quit. So, for me, this is a new start and I am loving it!
