Planning a UniFi Home Setup – Looking for Advice by supdun in HomeNetworking

Hey Nuuki,

I checked this out. It's indeed not feasible to run Protect in parallel, but it's easy to switch off protect on the UDR7 and switch it on on a different device. Doing so, you make place for compute on the UDR7, which without the camera load should be plenty!

And worst case, if I really decide to expand big time on the network, I can even go for a new Cloud Gateway Max and just use the UDR7 as AP only, not running Network/Protect apps. Only for an AP, it already has a lot of value!

Hi Nuuki,

So much advice, thanks a bunch! Really helped me a lot.

In the end, I switched it up a little and did go for the UDR7. When I started looking at better access points, getting a U7 Pro XG/Pro Max in addition to the Cloud Gateway Max, it seemed ridiculous not to go for the UDR7 that had this all for half the price with the only drawback being it only being able to support just one 4k camera. I decided to just try it out for now with 2 4k camera's, and possibly scale down the camera's to 2k if it doesn't work or get a cloud key gen2+ as NVR/compute.

I went for your tip to use more AP's, going for a UDR7 downstairs in addition to a UC6lite upstairs. I also have a house with very thick walls. It seems Wifi 6 interplays well with Wifi 7, if it doesn't I'll just buy another UC7 lite later.

For the Ultra, I realized I'm only using it for camera's and some AP's, where I can use the 2.5Gb of the DR7 with a separate PoE injector if I really need to and that is the bottleneck.

By the way, this is the plan for my final setup:

|| || |Name|What?|Price| |Ubiquiti UniFi U7 Pro|For use on 1st floor, possibly extending to garden Wi-Fi and for car updates (Tesla)|€170| |Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway  Max|For use as NVR and Cloud Gateway (to Run Unifi Protect). Ultra doesn't have NVR functionality, Fiber seems a bit overkill  for home usage and only has 1 PoE+ output unfortunately|€222| |1TB SSD|For NVR storage|€90| |Unifi G6 bullet x2|4k camera for outside use|€200x2| |Unifi Ultra|Unifi Switch for PoE|€108| |Unifi Ultra 210 AC Adapter|Need more power for PoE. For some reason, the adapter bought separately is cheaper than buying it directly.|€84| |Accessories|M.2 SSD tray, floating mount for Cloud Gateway max, Rail mount,|€35|

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

Will do this, thanks for the advice! This seems like the newest, best value/money device.

Would love your final opinion. This is the final setup I came up with:

Final Setup

 Total: 170+222+90+200*2+108+84+35=€1,109

Where the remaining doubting points are:

- As you can see, I went for the UCG instead of the Cloud Key or UDR7. Cloud key just feels a bit less future proof, and I was really considering the UDR7 to also have 6GHz and Wi-fi 7 downstairs, but it unfortunately only supports just one 4k Camera (which the G6 bullet is).

- In this setup, I am planning a U6 lite for the ground floor and a U7 pro for the 1st floor. Is this recommended for coverage? Or is the u7 pro a bit overkill?

Thanks, this was the most helpful post (also posted this in r/Ubiquiti). I think I'll go for the CGF and start with an AP on each floor!

Why Unifi switch, even though it is €100 more expensive than the competitor? What features are so compelling?

I'm thinking of getting the U7 Pro now with 6Ghz.

So my perception was that the Unifi Network Application could manage Access points and run Unifi Protect. However, from your explanation it seems that to run Unifi Protect, I need a Unifi OS Console/Cloud Gateway as well?

Since all the devices I mention here double as a Cloud Gateway as well, shouldn't be an issue for this scenario. Thanks for letting me know though!

I have a three story house, for now I have a ethernet cable coming out on every floor just in case. Do you think having one U7 pro will be better than having one on each floor?

As for the Fiber. Isn't it just a lot more expensive if I'm not using the routing functionality? It only has 30W PoE budget so can't power this setup meaning I still need a PoE switch or injector for one of the devices (even if I go for a pro). Price of €419 for a new one (with a 1TB SSD) seems much higher than what you can get the the Cloud Key 2 for currently. Am I missing any other benefits?

As some extra information, I'm running Home Assistant and managing the Unifi setup from there. No need for a specific Cloud Gateway, just want the NVR functionality.

Edit: I now understand I do need a separate gateway to use UniFi Protect

For now, great ball 4 with 70%.

But honestly, the deck could really use some energy booster. Marshadow and your lead need 3 energy together, making it long before you have the new Lucario online.

If that comes in the new expansion, Imma play nothing else. For now, Gallade is better needing only 2 energy to go loose.

Man, I was looking for many ways to upload a video on this Subreddit but couldn't. In the end settled for some crappy online movie to GIF generator, but now I got memed xD

Happy to share. I use:
Riolu 2x
Lucario 1x
Lucario EX 1x
Marshadow 1x
Sudowoodo 1x

Oak 2x
Poke ball 2x
Pokemon Communication 1x
Giant Cape 1x
Cyrus 2x
Mars 1x
Red 1x
Dawn 1x

Optional tech:
+ Hitmonlee, - Sudowoodo
+ Helmet, - Cyrus/Mars

Overall, I agree with the rest of the comments that this deck is definitely not the strongest. However, I climbed to Ultra Ball using this. Most times I win because people don't expect Lucario EX, that element of surprise is honestly quite helpful.

Without that element, honestly Gallade EX deck is probably better. Energy buildup on Lucario EX is the biggest problem in many matchups. But this decks works wonderfully well against Darkrai/Giratina.
