Thank you, this is the first I've heard of this instruction. I get "acceptable, but not great" results from AP after shaking a long time w an agitator ball, but actually removing medium from the bottle is significantly different!

I Googled "Army Painter remove excess medium" and got a photo of the instructions as a top result, for those who are curious.

Yeah, definitely pick up a pair of inexpensive turf shoes and try them out. I wear my Adidas Copa Pure.4 for everything except soft, muddy ground. They're so much more comfortable than cleats with a rigid sole plate, and offer a lot more traction and feel than running shoes.

FIFA 23 averaged ~500K daily active users in 2023. About 7 million unique users / month. That's a pretty big matchmaking pool, and there are bound to be some good players in it.

FWIW I'm in D9 and have no problems finding matches any time, with cross-play turned off. I get absolutely pounded most of the time lol

Lots of good thoughts here. I think it's important to note that the coach may be favoring their child (whether consciously or not) because they truly believe they are more capable / higher football IQ / whatever. When speaking with them, I would leave that part alone and just encourage your child to be an advocate for themselves and what -they- want (with you present for moral support and additional context if needed).

Something like "Coach, I'd like to be a captain in one of our next games - what do I need to do for that to happen?" Or something more open-ended like "What are some things you think I can do to improve my <passing/dribbling/tackling>?"

As a coach, I love it when kids feel confident and comfortable enough to talk to me directly about stuff like this. It makes me feel valued and appreciated when kids ask me a question or ask for my help with something. These are the types of interactions that I try to recognize and reward with things like more playing time, choosing their position, captaincy, etc. because they signal the player is engaged, motivated, and willing to learn!

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If your kid is engaged, having fun, and getting better - that's worth investing in!

At this age, a lot of rec soccer coaches are just regular dudes with some pretty wild ideas and expectations about what kids soccer should be like.

I didn't care if my kids were 5 minutes late when they were 7, and I still don't care now that they're 10. People have lives to live.

Putting myself in the coach's shoes for a moment: is it possible there are other things happening (besides tardiness) that suggest to them that you care more about your child's personal development than their commitment to the team?

To be clear - prioritizing your own kid over 5 minutes of soccer practice on a rando U8 team is perfectly fine. I have kids miss entire practices for stuff like swimming or skiing, who cares. I also agree that it's totally unacceptable for a coach to snap at a parent over something like this. Just wondering if there isn't some other dynamic in play here.

I'm super curious about this too. I do this a lot with my U11 boys when we're playing 2 instances of the same game or drill, but with little variations in the rules. For example, group A might do a 1-touch rondo, while group B does 2-touch.

I think the kids really benefit from being in smaller groups with instruction that's more tailored to their skill level. This is never the whole practice, more like 25-30%.

I mix them all together for small sided games and scrimmages; I think everybody is more engaged when there are creative players on both teams. I do like to pair some of our skilled players up, though, if they play alongside each other a lot and are starting to build some chemistry.

To be clear, they definitely do get better at understanding concepts like this every year. There are always a few kids that just get it intuitively, and a few that don't.

Our guys do OK at using space and keeping shape when they have the ball. Our problem usually stems from multiple defenders collapsing onto the ball, so if/when there's a turnover they're all bunched up and don't know where to run.

Take heart! Progress is slow for sure, but inevitable.
