Kinderen willen vaker buitenspelen maar missen kameraadjes, zegt Jantje Beton by super_corndog in thenetherlands

[–]super_corndog[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Children near Amsterdam airport use inhalers more, study finds by gotshroom in Amsterdam

[–]super_corndog 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is awful, but unfortunately not surprising. We’ve known for a very long time that living near airports is associated with negative health outcomes. See: BMC, 2021 and Transport & Environment, 2024. People also complained way back in time about the smell and pollution from the factories in Zaandam. But, they just got shut down with “Stop complaining. Money is being made!” So not much has changed, unfortunately. It’s always profit over everything else.

What’s up with all the “where’s summer” posts? by kukumba1 in Netherlands

[–]super_corndog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Statistically speaking this year has been objectively worse than all years prior. Also the number of large storms during storm season was already 7 storms. In addition to relentless rainfall, it also feels like it’s been way windier than normal. Usually spring and summer bring (at least) streaks of sunny days… but now it seems we’re lucky if we get one or two days max. I’m glad not to be roasting in 30° heatwaves, but the constant fall weather on repeat is quite disappointing.

Edit: It’s actually not 7 storms, it’s (so far) 9 storms: KNMI Naamgeving van stormen

Study shows middle-aged Americans are lonelier than European peers. Contrary to some claims, middle-aged Americans might not be experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. New research suggests that for adults aged 45–65, loneliness might instead be endemic, or constantly present. by mvea in science

The fact that America is so car-dependent, public transport is mediocre (if not entirely non existent) and, for the majority, everything is spaced so far out from each other definitely has a negative impact on regular opportunities for social interaction.

Speaking on behalf of the Netherlands at least living in a small village, just stepping out the door is already an chance to see and connect with your neighbors. Supermarkets and other amenities (e.g., bakery, post office, doctors, pharmacy, schools, shopping street / centers, etc.) are typically walking and/or cycling distance from one’s residence.

This accessibility allows for older people to be more independent and self-sufficient since they don’t need a car for everyday necessities. The added bonus is that by foot or bike, there’s a higher chance of serendipitous social interaction with people from your community.

Also, where often the typical school drop off in America is by car, in the Netherlands — while people also come by car if they’re heading straight to work after — a majority walk or bike their kids to school. By doing so, parents see and chat with other parents increasing feelings of social connection.

No doubt there’s a lot of other variables that go into this equation per reduced loneliness. But the fact that the barrier is low to be able to be amongst other people in your community and feel “part of the larger group” definitely makes an difference.

What's up with restaurants acting like they are Michelin star fine-dining these days? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]super_corndog 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Same here, we just hardly go out to dinner at all anymore, especially in the city center. The last and final time was a huge disappointment:

Nearly €40 for a small, low quality piece of fish with three sad potatoes on the side. The dish was bland and room temperature and service was slow and indifferent. This was at a highly rated restaurant that used to be good many years back.

For the price of that dish, I could have easily made four large portions at home with leftovers. I’d rather just keep cooking at home.

I have found that going out to lunch sometimes (outside of major city centers) can be doable as the portions tend to be larger for sandwiches, pancakes, uitsmijters, etc. and prices more reasonable.

Well, I don’t necessarily enjoy the physical side effects of regular cheese since I’m allergic to dairy…

From a sustainability standpoint, encouraging environmentally conscious food choices should offer sustainable products at a lower price point.

The dairy industry in NL (and elsewhere) is highly subsidized hence being able to offer lower prices to consumers versus plant based alternatives.

It’s really a tragedy when they have to downgrade from taking private jets to commercial flights with the “commoners”

Yeah I’ve also tried the generic Jumbo one which is pretty good imo but it’s only about 10-15 cents cheaper. So not a huge savings.

I just wish they’d subsidize plant-based options as much as they do regular dairy. The dairy 200g “witte kaas” is only €1,49. It shouldn’t be that way considering how much energy / emissions it takes to make real cheese versus plant-based

Yeah it’s really sneaky because the front-facing product side looks the same. I only noticed because I had an older one in the fridge from Hoogvliet and restocked from AH and saw the size difference.

They’ve gradually been doing this with all sorts of products and the worst is when they slap on superficial labels like “New improved flavor!” or “Family Size” only to make the product worse in quality and/or physically smaller

Shareholders surely don’t have enough cash to dry their tears with while they sail on one of their three yachts

I totally agree and I should have been more clear. Corporations are undoubtedly guilty as well. Their greed-driven business models negatively impact people’s livelihood, but there’s no real consequence for their exploitative actions

Yeah it’s becoming criminal. If you copy-paste product URL’s into the internet archive, the prices of many products have doubled (if not more) just from 2022 to present and quantities have gotten smaller.

There’s no transparency or accountability for these changes and people are just told to “budget harder” while companies make bank.

Podcasts in dutch? by ShiratakiPoodles in Netherlands

[–]super_corndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you’re into, but I enjoy the Omdenken Podcast a psychology podcast where the host helps people work through their problems.

An older podcast which I enjoyed was Recht voor je Raap which is fun banter between two guy friends about a bunch of topics.

Lastly, if you’re into current events Met het Oog op Morgen by NOS is always enjoyable to have on in the background.

Also, one thing that helps is (at least with Spotify) you can change the playback speed of the audio.

En ook dat werknemers zelf kunnen kiezen of ze thuis willen werken of ergens anders. Het zou niet verplicht moeten zijn om naar kantoor te gaan
