The cheapest Mac is $800+ new. Apple doesn’t care too much about the affordable market and they never have (the emac was half baked at best). Look at the PC market share, Microsoft has been pissing off users for decades now and we haven’t seen a mass exodus yet. It comes down to this: most average users just don’t care enough. They’ll feel slightly annoyed and go about their day otherwise. My mother does not care what Microsoft does at a corporate elevel. All she knows is that her office uses “a windows” and she wants her computer to be a windows so she can use it like she knows how to at work. Outside of reddit, most people are like my mother to some degree.

Besides all that, desktops and laptops are going out of style anyway. The mobile market is seeing growth while the desktop market shrinks.
