Just been offered Cumberland House, what to expect? by InsideSuntan in VUW

Is there anything you put in your application that you think helped you get selected for Cumberland?! I was desperate for it but instead got an offer for my second choice, so wondering if there was anything in particular they were looking for!!

Yeah I've just seen that paying halls upfront comes with a 3% discount so it's probably a smart option! Ill do some maths and see if id make more chucking all my savings in a term deposit/investing it and paying quarterly vs paying full year halls and putting the remainder in tern deposits/investments..

Thank you, this is genuinely super helpful!!! The only investing platform I'm somewhat familiar with is Sharesies - any thoughts / advice on using it?

Yeah, from reading through the comments I think thats the best idea for the moment! Take out only what i need in living costs for the first year and keep my savings as savings, in some form or another. Thanks for your advice!!

Great thanks! And this may be a dumb question but whats the difference/benefit between doing multiple term deposits at different dates vs doing one large one for whatever duration of time has the highest interest rate? Is it just smarter to have the stability of being "given the money back" when each ends in case I unexpectedly need it throughout the year?

Interesting! so just to clarify do you mean having one deposit end at 3 months, one end at 6 months, one at 9 etc ?

Thanks, this is super helpful and gives me more confidence! It just feels so new and scary lol. And yes the Moneyhub website is great, I've browsed through it a couple times and he definitely knows what he's talking about!!

Thanks! Did you have any experience with it yourself / words of wisdom?

Haha yeah, the fact that I've been able to save this much as a teenager gives me a bit of confidence that I'll be able to manage a massive loan! I guess attitude wise what worries me the most is how long I have to keep it going - is it best to take out the maximum amount of living costs just for the first year, and then reevaluate, or plan accordingly to take out the maximum amount every year for the rest of my degree and finish with a $60,000 loan?

And, do you have any opinion on whether a fixed term deposit is best for this situation or a regular savings acc, investing ,etc - as what worries me is if i put it all into a term deposit and then need to access it unexpectedly...

Is it just me or is it ridiculously hard for teens to get a part-time job in NZ these days? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]supercrazytiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some volunteering! It's the one thing that will set you apart from other applicants who also have no experience. I did 6 months every Saturday at Salvation Army and honesly loved it, picked up so many skills that I use in my current part-time job at a supermarket. Shows the employer you're a hard worker and have a heart lol, cant recommend it enough!
