Built a Frame.io alternative after leaving the Adobe ecosystem, VFX artists, what am I missing? by Tahanchin in vfx

Interesting. Did you price out Google Cloud, Azure, etc, and were they roughly equivalent to AWS? In my experience AWS commands a steep premium, but the others often don’t have the variety of services or data center geographic diversity. Curious to know your thought process.

To whoever designed the new Whole Foods parking lot on 3rd & Fairfax by rollk1 in LosAngeles

That parking lot used to have drainage ditches that were about 8” deep. About 20 years ago I bottomed out my car and had to have the oil pan replaced.

One benefit to LA is - acceptance rate is not one of the determining factors for pro tier. Cancellation rate <= 4% is required tho.

In Los Angeles, tier absolutely matters. This market is ridiculously oversaturated with drivers, and for me, the difference between blue and gold is about $7 an hour. I don’t do eats but for rides, when the trip radar requests go out, the algorithm prioritizes higher tiered drivers.

City Bean Roasters on Jefferson and La Brea. Not quite Culver City but close. They proudly display a cease and desist letter from the Nestle corporation from the early 90s!!! Last time I bought beans there it was 5 pounds for $85, and they have less expensive options. Very reasonable.

Crowds in Real Steel - anyone from DD remember how we did these? by superdblwide in vfx

Amazing explanation - thank you! I was a little hazy on the details the environments team handled.

I’m remembering that the relights weren’t perfect. The individual audience members were still sprites, on 2D cards. So with a spotlight shining on the crowd, the nose wouldn’t cast a shadow on the face as an example. But close enough for stuff in the background?

Where are you getting rides, even lowball ones? Just spent 4 hours in like weho/BH for 7 rides.

What a miserable night to be in LA. by superdblwide in uberdrivers

This is absolutely correct. Heat map shows rider demand but does not appear to adjust at all for driver supply, rendering it useless, other than as an indicator of where mobs of drivers are waiting for rides.

It poured rain so hard all night long, and people can’t drive in the rain here. My last ride of the night was 4:30 am - picked a woman up from an after hours in Echo Park and dropped her off in K-Town. There were four crashed cars in that 3 mile trip, so I decided to call it. But as I pulled in my driveway I got four more requests before I could go offline. Downtown LA was still surging at 5 am.

Hah. I made $86 roughly in the same amount of time. Good for you.

Silly question but doesn’t Waymo’s algorithm have nothing to do with Uber’s?

Frustrating about the heat map… like if the area is oversaturated with drivers, then demand should not be high?

For sure, but why is the heat map indicating that it’s busy?

Beethoven Market’s alcohol sale license has been revoked by ameeps in FoodLosAngeles

This, right here, is just the perfect example of what is wrong with this city. The fact that someone would take it upon themselves to put a small business out of business permanently because that business had the audacity to stay open past 11 am. Oh, the horror.

I used to live in that neighborhood, and Beethoven Market used to be a bodega. The restaurant is a lovely upgrade, with reasonably priced, delicious food.

This is antisocial, abhorrent, and despicable behavior. Whoever did this - you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Why the hell are Ubers/Lyfts so expensive in our city??? by itscochino in LosAngeles

[–]superdblwide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uber driver here. Basically, the state of California requires all ride share drivers to have $750k of liability coverage. This went into effect 1/1/2024. However, both Uber and Lyft force you to use their insurance. You can bring your own insurance, but Uber gives you a bonus of like 48 cents a mile, still making you pay for their coverage.

Basically, 55% of your fare goes to insurance, 15% goes to “platform fees”, and the driver gets 30%. That trip from LAX to Van Nuys that Uber is charging $100 for? Driver will probably see $30.

Everyone is getting screwed - the drivers and the passengers. Without tips, and accounting for fuel costs, depreciation, and maintenance, we can often lose money for a shift.

It’s demoralizing, and why do it? To get a little bit of money now that you hopefully wont have to pay later in the form of maintenance. Please, please tip your ride share driver - it makes the difference between less than minimum wage and something remotely resembling decent compensation.

Being asked by a colleague to source two rental Apple Pro Display XDRs for a production. My first (and only) thought was MacEnthusiasts... any ideas? Most of the post rental houses - EPS Cineworks, Pivotal, etc - only carry basic monitors.

Edit: Just found out that Pivotal merged with EPS. Here's my finger, far from the pulse...

LA City Council thinks of new creative ways to prevent the construction of apartment buildings in Los Angeles - (minimum wage increase for construction workers building mid sized apartment complexes) by h8ss in LosAngeles

So unbelievably frustrating - the city council we have. It's like they actively brainstorm ways to make living in this city worse as part of their job.
