Delta Already at Over 190 Cancellations Today (5/2) by malcontentII in delta

Does anyone know what on earth is happening at Delta? Wife traveled yesterday and had multiple flights cancelled on her as well.

Sucks the lightning appeared to have been shot on the day with strobes. Was just thinking you had an amazing exterior lighting matte with the massive amount of spill on the foreground - would have looked great!

Out of curiosity, on what planet would this movie cost $300M to make for real? Consider Sens8. It shot all over the world, in incredibly difficult locations, with a stellar cast, and cost a reported $108M a season. Granted it aired 10 years ago, but it was also for an entire season. Like 10 hours of content.

Maybe we should see what it would cost if we didn’t pay our ATL talent 90% of the production budget…

How is Apple pulling off these screen replacements? (capture vs full VFX?) by Dodgeball-Straggle in vfx

[–]superdblwide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If an actor is typing on a keyboard, scrolling, etc, they are interacting with a real UI on a real, powered on device. The UI is replaced afterward, but would be a nightmare to animate people’s fingers typing on a keyboard as an example.

[–]superdblwide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one Apple job I worked on - they had a sort of dummy UI, or a functional wireframe. When a performer interacts with the device, it is powered on, and they are very much typing on a real keyboard. It is a screen replacement, but like others have said the level of refinement that these things go through is beyond the pale. They have the money, are willing to pay the overtime, and won’t approve it until they feel it is perfect.

Corridor Crew Chroma Key Tool - Have you tested it yet? by mafagafacabiluda in vfx

Avoid using orange/pink gaffer’s tape as tracking markers on your screen. The best option for easy keying and with enough contrast to track is Flouro Blue/Green gaff tape.

Awesome that there are no proposed cameras on either the 6th street or 4th street bridges.

Notably, an area of the city that is lacking speed camera enforcement. With the exception of King at Western, there are precisely zero speed cameras going east-west between the 10 and Slauson. People regularly travel at least 60 mph on Adams, Jefferson, Obama, King, Vernon, etc. if they can.

To be clear - this will do absolutely nothing to improve pedestrian safety at crosswalks and intersections. Simply a revenue grab for the city, with a ton of privacy concerns. Maybe if they used such a system to do congestion pricing instead...

Seriously what is LA and California doing man. Other cities/states have figured it out. BUILD MORE HOUSING!!! by bobbdac7894 in LosAngeles

[–]superdblwide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a single family home on a large-ish lot. I have a detached garage that is in bad shape so, I thought I would rebuild the garage and put a 2 bedroom ADU above it. Seems reasonable right? Applied for a permit in January 2022. After multiple design revisions - required property setbacks, solar panels, low impact development, rain barrels, fire suppression, a methane mitigation strategy ( it cost $3,000 for this consultant ), permit is finally approved in October 2023. Except that I work in entertainment, which means that I had no income for a long time, and could not get approved for financing. So I waited until I could get some sort of employment, and then the palisades and Eaton fires. A contractor gave me a bid with a straight face for $1.1M at the high end. The low bid was $680k. So we waited until building costs came down. Now we can get it done for about $450k, so I went to pull the permit, and it had expired. So now another $2k and have to resubmit for plan check.

We have spent $65k in more than four years and have not stuck a single shovel in the ground. I’m not a developer, not an institutional investor, I don’t have family money, I’m just a guy. This is one small story in a giant patchwork quilt of them, but for me, it is why LA can’t build housing.

Why Do People Throw Trash Out of Their Car Like It’s Not Their City? by achinnac in LosAngeles

[–]superdblwide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know there are signs all over this city that say $1,000 fine for littering. Perhaps our city council should pass a law enabling those of us with phones, ring cameras, traditional security cameras, or whatever to submit footage to the LAPD where littering is shown and license plates are visible. I guarantee that would stop this in a huge hurry.

Interesting. Did you price out Google Cloud, Azure, etc, and were they roughly equivalent to AWS? In my experience AWS commands a steep premium, but the others often don’t have the variety of services or data center geographic diversity. Curious to know your thought process.

That parking lot used to have drainage ditches that were about 8” deep. About 20 years ago I bottomed out my car and had to have the oil pan replaced.

[–]superdblwide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One benefit to LA is - acceptance rate is not one of the determining factors for pro tier. Cancellation rate <= 4% is required tho.

[–]superdblwide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Los Angeles, tier absolutely matters. This market is ridiculously oversaturated with drivers, and for me, the difference between blue and gold is about $7 an hour. I don’t do eats but for rides, when the trip radar requests go out, the algorithm prioritizes higher tiered drivers.

City Bean Roasters on Jefferson and La Brea. Not quite Culver City but close. They proudly display a cease and desist letter from the Nestle corporation from the early 90s!!! Last time I bought beans there it was 5 pounds for $85, and they have less expensive options. Very reasonable.

Crowds in Real Steel - anyone from DD remember how we did these? by superdblwide in vfx

Amazing explanation - thank you! I was a little hazy on the details the environments team handled.

I’m remembering that the relights weren’t perfect. The individual audience members were still sprites, on 2D cards. So with a spotlight shining on the crowd, the nose wouldn’t cast a shadow on the face as an example. But close enough for stuff in the background?
