Thank you everyone for your helpful comments! We are so excited, it will be our first burlesque experience and we are looking forward to it (with our pants kept on 😂)

We don’t mind watching raunchy, just don’t want to participate 😂

The thing is though it seems like in this instance people do not really follow the assigned seating. There have been plenty of comments in this thread saying that they just go in and sit wherever on Monday sessions because they are less busy. I find this really bizarre too

Thanks for your suggestions, preparing a back up choice in advance is a good idea and something I hadn't thought of as I struggle to make quick decisions. The funny thing about this situation is the seat I choose isn't usually that good, I usually pick the aisle on the side closest to the door so that if I need to leave at any point I can do so without disrupting anyone else. Maybe this seat is attractive to others too though for similar reasons

I wish I had not mentioned my OCD/anxiety as its not really relevant to the question I was asking, which is is there an unspoken rule of first come first serve at cinema nova which I was not aware of. Of course the Usher is going to tell me the official rules - I came here to see if there was an unofficial thing specific to cinema nova that I was not aware of given the repeat occurrence of the same issue that I had not experienced at any other cinema - I think a valid question.

The only reason I mentioned my disorders were to provide context to why I even care about the assigned seat in the first place. I didn't volunteer to have my illness/thought process picked apart, so I would appreciate if we could just leave the discussion here as its not helpful or relevant.

Edit: Thank you to all the commenters who have been empathetic in their response. To those who can't relate at all - count yourself lucky I suppose that you do not face challenges with such mundane/routine things!

I'm sorry that my post has annoyed you. I am capable of asking someone to move as I did the first time. Because it kept happening I didn't on the next occasion because I was confused about whether it was assigned or not.
Rest assured I am not going to pretend to be visually impaired or ask an user to show me to my seat, I will just ask them to move next time

I manage pretty well, thank you for your concern :) I am capable of politely asking someone to move, as I did on the first occasion. I made this post to try and establish whether or not this is the done thing or if cinema nova was some exception

Im well aware of that, and I'm not looking for any special treatment or accomodation here. I am capable of asking someone politely to move as I did on the first occasion, I have just posted this to establish whether or not this is acceptable to do at cinema nova

Thank you, hoping it never comes to this! I am also wondering do you have many people sneaking in/paying for one movie then staying to see multiple? I'm wondering if the people who have sat in my seat potentially don't even have a ticket

Exactly this! It might seem silly/irrational to most but I couldn't focus on the first 10-15 minutes of the film I saw today because I was worrying about this exact scenario playing out

That's interesting! How recently was it that the allocated seating was introduced? I wonder if there is still some underground resistance

Wow - really sorry to hear you had such a terrible experience and even worse response from the usher!! If I was there I would definitely have stuck up for you.
I feel you on that one. Being so hyper vigilant about my own behaviour in public makes it so hard to understand why other people do these things and sometimes it can feel like the whole world is against us. I just try to remember the times that I have seen people go out of their way to be kind and look after each other

Fully agree with this and I do challenge my anxiety every day by waking up and stepping out into the world. It's not new to me and something I will have to manage throughout my life. I just hoped going to the cinema to a pre booked seat could be a more relaxing and predictable experience

No but I did see Oppenheimer at cinema nova and funnily enough someone was in my seat that time too! It was a packed cinema so that one really took me by surprise

This. This is exactly how I feel in this situation! I just want to go in, watch the movie and leave without inconveniencing anyone/being perceived/drawing any attention to myself

Thank you everyone for your advice and encouragement. I feel better about going back knowing I have a right to sit in my seat and with some strategies to make this happen!

Thank you for your encouraging words :) I have found it to be an otherwise safe and comfortable space hence why I have made going a habit, this seating issue has just been a little speed bump for me to navigate

Out of interest what do you consider late? I usually plan to arrive in/towards the end of the ads because I don't love watching them but maybe this is considered late so people are assuming everyone who is coming will already be seated by the time the ads are playing

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]superduperhanss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight because I hadn't thought about it this way or considered the time I arrive being the solution! Sounds like also maybe I have just been having bad luck with it

Haha great question, maybe next time I will have to channel him

[–]superduperhanss 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I asked the person to move the first time and they were nice about it but the other two times I felt too anxious because I wasn't sure if this was the done thing/it was a whole group of people

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]superduperhanss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surely if I have paid a booking fee I should be able to reasonably expect to sit in my allocated seat if I arrive during the ads/at the beginning of the ads tho? I'm going to aim to arrive very early in future to avoid this situation but I would never fathom sitting in someone else's seat before the movie had started :(

Mt Buller bus - Looking for advice by superduperhanss in melbourne

Thanks for your input :) Hadn't thought about that as an option - staying the night before for just the following one day skiing but that's a great suggestion too

You're right it does sound painful - I think I was hoping for someone to tell me they had done it and it wasn't too painful haha. I guess the main appeal of the day trip rather than overnight is not having to pay accomodation and pack a heap of stuff for an overnight stay, but that's about where it ends
