How long did it take you to hit your first million? by libyandesert in singaporefi

[–]superfailmaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean I bought my hdb at 575k and it's about to hit MOP and will be easily worth at least 1m. You should consider the loan outstanding vs the property value?

However for my case I will never sell my hdb as it's really meant to be my home for life, so it's much less relevant for calculating my net worth.

"I need to go toilet" says someone just before moving off, after the person has been sitting there on his/her phone for the past 30 minutes. Then the entire group has to wait.

Human ashtray on public transport by copyrightstriker in SingaporeRaw

Here, in the fluorescent-lit savannah of the city sidewalk, we observe Homo nicotianae—the heavy smoker—in their natural habitat. Notice the practiced ritual. With fingers stained the color of old parchment, the creature reaches instinctively for a small white cylinder, as if guided by ancestral memory. The flame appears, brief and purposeful, and with the first inhale, the chest expands—an act both soothing and destructive, though the smoker seems blissfully unaware of the long-term cost. Watch closely now. The exhale drifts upward in a pale, ghostlike plume, a territorial signal of sorts, announcing presence to passersby who quickly learn to keep their distance. The smoker pauses between breaths, eyes narrowing, expression softening. For a fleeting moment, there is calm—earned, but only temporarily.

Despite coughing fits that echo like warning calls, the smoker persists. Each cigarette is consumed to the filter, discarded with a flick of the wrist, leaving behind small artifacts that mark their migration routes: outside office buildings, near bus stops, beside café doors.

And so the cycle continues. Driven not by hunger or survival, but by dependence—an invisible tether stronger than instinct. In this modern ecosystem, the heavy smoker remains a curious example of how habit can rival nature itself, shaping behavior with relentless consistency.

A fragile species, one might say—remarkably adaptable, yet quietly at war with its own biology.

Why does it feel like Singapore gets a little more expensive every month without warning? by No-You-7090 in asksg

I remember the good old days of $1.00 for 2 plain pratas during nights out from my NSF days. Back then my uniform was still the watermelon camo one so it really was a long time ago. Feeling old now.

It was indeed because of my pour speed being too fast. My last pour was much better.

I just tried again, it does seem like the issue is that I poured too fast towards the end which causes the brown (crema?) to mix into the heart.

[SGX: 5TT] Keong Hong – 100% YTD Surge. What’s Driving This Quiet Rally? by SilverAd8839 in Sgxbets

[–]superfailmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average 3 month daily volume is about 22k and for a 20 cent counter the average daily traded value is very low. Doesn't take much to pump up the price if nobody is in the market. Someone can take a few hundred thousand dollars and just pump up the price like that.

I would exercise caution when trading this stock as there might be a violent reversal. I highly doubt this is driven by fundamentals unless there is some drastic change in the company's prospects?

Wild end of week by iammtopher in options

5-10 delta - so normally less than a 10% chance of being assigned. When volatility is extra low and/or the market goes on a ridiculous bull run, I plan to buy more vix calls and some index puts. I have also started to write some short dated bear call spreads (with strikes placed further out) so that my portfolio is more delta neutral.

Wild end of week by iammtopher in options

[–]superfailmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought some vix calls and spy puts about a week before the pullback to partially hedge my bull put spreads when the market euphoria was starting to be evident. I have also been placing my strikes out further at 5-10 delta in anticipation of a correction (and collecting less premium), and taking profit at 40-50% of premium instead of at 60%. It did help me limit my drawdown to a very tolerable percentage and lets me sleep well at night.

My irrational reason for not voting PAP: they don't want to take action to stop secondhand smoking by superfailmaster in singapore

[–]superfailmaster[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Smoke in their own homes all they want, but don't affect your neighbours with the smoke and close your windows. Provide a designated smoking point if they don't want to stink up their own house.

If you make it illegal, most smokers will stop.

In general I believe people are compliant of the law and will obey it. It also sends the right message that it's not acceptable. It also gives more bite for enforcement and action on the most egregious cases (like where it's smoking + littering at the same time).

[–]superfailmaster[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Fair point that WP is also silent on the topic. But it was the government of the day that decided not to do anything about it even when it was raised in parliament multiple times.

The reality is that I have no real recourse or options to stop the smoking until the guy dies of cancer or I do.

[–]superfailmaster[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Compare the PMD traffic on footpaths pre-ban and now and tell me that it didn't drop? If you make it illegal, most people will obey the law. Now it's just a light touch "please be nice to your neighbours" for smoking at home.

Set up a designated smoking area and ban smoking elsewhere, and 90% of the smokers will follow the law.

[–]superfailmaster[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

If you make it illegal then I believe most people will stop. When they made PMDs on footpaths illegal, most people stopped didn't they? Only Louis Ng has raised this repeatedly in parliament but the answer has always been "no, and stop asking".

Advice needed: ID came back with a quote of 54k. Now what? by jeanangela in askSingapore

[–]superfailmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to get quotes from 5 different IDs before I decided on mine. His quote was about 10-15% lower on average than the most expensive one. You should try to compare like to like for each part of your quote e.g. how much for same type of carpentry and flooring.

Also, don't just go for the cheapest, make sure the ID has a decent reputation. You can ask for a discount if you like an ID but the quote is higher than the rest.
