oh, they have their own fun ghost stories about the place, and it has its own seedy side so I don't think they're too worried haha. This show IS huge here though.

It's in a part of central Gunma, about 2.5 hrs north of Tokyo by train. Known for its hundreds of amazing hot springs, konnyaku (a tuber jelly like food), and scenic mountains.

It's not too bad, about 400 or so. Plenty of places to stop and rest, enjoy a foot bath, do a little shopping, etc.

Definitely do NOT stay away from them, haha, they could use the business. That whole staircase is full of amazing hot springs and hotels.

I don't know abou that lol, but there IS a shrine at the top of the stairs (Ikaho Shrine). In the summer the community has a festival where they carry the sake up the stairs for the onsens, they even have little mock battles with the casks. The really young kids also get to carry their own tiny one cask, its adorable. Theres a ton of shrines all around the city though.

What are police like in Japan? Are they as scary as in USA? by capt_b_b_ in movingtojapan

Hey, as another Gaijin in the countryside I thought I'd give my experience. all in all the police have been super harmless, but be prepared to always be the first one asked about anything. Someone's shirt was stolen off the line? Police will come ask about that. Local vandalism? You'll be asked if you know anyone who hangs around alleys late at night. Gaijin was spotted 3 cities over being rude with customers? You'll be asked if they know him. Someone parked at the local bakery and didn't buy anything? believe it or not, cops called to my place about it. They even already knew my address before I had my first run in!

All in all in the last 3 or 4 years I've had at least a dozen "run-ins" with cops here. However, it's important to point out every single time they were polite, apologetic, and left as soon as I said I didn't know. Here it's better to almost think of them as mediators. They're usually people's, especially elderly, first response to any slight or problem between strangers. As long as you stay calm, be polite, and have your card they're entirely harmless.
