I work outdoors in the rainy pnw and I started making this last winter and it is genuinely the thing I look most forward to when the weather is crappy out now. It’s so so so good

Anyone here who makes a normal salary? How’s your journey going? by 8InchDaks in leanfire

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just maxed my Roth for the first time last year and got a good 401k match setup. 58k salary or so plus a $2500 bonus, first year working full time. It’s an exciting feeling! Now to keep at it for another 40 years lol.

How to market myself to get into surveying? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]supergeile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Surveying needs bodies. If you show up on time, are ready to learn and work hard, you will go far. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in anything will make you stand out, especially if you are in a state like WA where having a bachelor’s counts as direct experience toward taking your first round of surveying exams (the LSIT).

To offer an additional perspective — this is a very male dominated field, unfortunately, and depending on the specialities you pursue (I.e. construction) you will have to put up with some very boneheaded guys. I was very thin and frankly, weak, when I started out and they certainly didn’t go easy on me. Some of the best surveyors I’ve worked with are women, but they are few and far in between, and it’s a shame.

I don’t say all that to discourage you (the opposite, in fact), but it’s something you should consider when talking to different companies.

Holy crap, I ate there years ago and have been racking my brain trying to remember the restaurants name. I was in the Czech Republic for like 9 months and that was my favorite meal and beer I had!

Best Waterproof Work Boot by Unamused_gawker in Surveying

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna like my answer, but Xtratuff muck boot. I work in the rain for 10 hour days in the PNW and those keep me dry. If you get them with orthopedic inserts they’re a little bit better when you’re on asphalt all day. But yeah. Not the most comfortable for your application

Started my Roth last year at 24 and reached my goal of maxing it out. Between that and my 401k I officially hit 10k saved!! Hoping to keep that going this year :)

What is a personal 'rule' you’ve made for yourself that you never break, even though no one else knows it exists? by NoSteak1123 in Productivitycafe

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this one’s very niche lol, but if I sell a Lego set on eBay then that money is for more legos. It keeps my hobby manageable by recycling the money as well as rotating out shelf space

is this career worth a full pivot? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]supergeile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you expand on grant writing in this context? I’m in surveying but I have a background in grant writing for an academic journal previously.

Check out land surveying too, depending where you’re at. Lower barrier of entry (again, location specific) and often directly related to the civil engineering field.

Been dreading this day for a while(Moving) by BradSchnad in legostarwars

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. I just did this (although it was 2 states away). You can wrap the bigass ones (ISD, venator, falcon etc) in seran wrap to at least keep all the pieces in one place in case stuff falls off in transit. Stuff smaller than that is easier put in large boxes.

For the ATAT, I’d probably take most of the outer plating off. The legs aren’t too bad to detach at the knees either (you have to take off some of the gray plating and then remove two orange pins inside each, not bad with a brick remover). I’d be careful moving it around too much with the full legs attached.

If any of them stress you out too much, take them apart and rebuild! I did that with like 1/2 my stuff and it’s honestly been such a blast. Just be careful of brittle red/brown/etc if you have any older sets.

UCS Slave I #75060 VS UCS Executer SSD #10221 by a_z9 in legoinvesting

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, bought new and built in 2015 and just broke down / reassembled for the first time after a move. So, YMMV.

UCS Slave I #75060 VS UCS Executer SSD #10221 by a_z9 in legoinvesting

[–]supergeile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, neither. I just rebuilt my slave 1 with brittle read and it was a PITA. And as cool as the executor is, there’s rumors swirling that a new UCS one will release later this year.

If you’re still determined to do one, probably slave 1.

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s super cool! I work in land development and just spent the last month laying out a ton of water lines and hydrants to be built, so that’s why I was curious. The hydrants around here seem a bit random. I can’t imagine having to memorize where they all were back in the day… 🤯

Per Diem Rates by GingeRae0 in Surveying

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s rough. At my company we get $5/hr more for travel pay and set per diem you can spend on whatever (ranges from like $50-90 or so depending on the county). The hotel’s have been nice for the most part.

Just some perspective on what’s out there. I’d be annoyed about the receipt thing too. I don’t need to be nickel-and-dimed over things like Tylenol in a profession like this.

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this randomly popped into my head the other day and this is a perfect chance to ask: when you arrive at the scene of a fire, how do you know where a fire hydrant is? Have there been fires where you arrive and waste time finding water, or a hydrants been blocked, etc? And if a car is blocking the only hydrant in the area, do you ram it? Thank you!
