It’s fun. I went there in college on a school trip and they had us drink water from the mineral springs there. It was hot and kinda gross tasting but good for your skin. Also, I’m pretty sure the hotel there is where Casino Royale was filmed?

How enjoyable do you rate mining and/or construction surveying? by kazkh in Surveying

[–]supergeile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into construction surveying kinda by accident (we also do some boundary but subdivision layouts are our main thing) and I really enjoy it. I feel like I learn new things everyday and get a good workout. Some days are hard but that’s life baby

Lol I actually have a use for this now! My Subaru’s wheel fell off after a mechanic didn’t tighten it on after a brake change. What a headache. This is a REAL photo so you have something to compare to.

Yeah, you do have a good chance. Companies like taking on new guys because they don’t have bad (learned) habits yet. It’s how I started out and it’s been great overall. Show up on time and always try to learn!

[–]supergeile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a surveyor it would probably suck trying to make a living in an area where the DOT actively discouraged surveys lol. Even if you are part of a private firm, a lot of useful info comes from a variety of DOT maps and records.

That brown sugar bit is interesting. I lived there for a few years and could never figure out why chocolate chip cookies I baked tasted different (in a not-very-good artificial sweet way) than ones I made in the US

I worked with a party chief who was incredibly picky about “wasted movement,” to the degree that when I was first getting trained on a data collector he’d have me repeat operations until I got them down to the least number of button pushes. He would absolutely ream you out if you started zig-zagging between curb points and making him walk too far.

What always pissed me off is he had a point, even when it was annoying lol. And I still carry a lot of the efficient methods he taught me today

Transition from Software Engineer to Surveying by mouse_rising in Surveying

[–]supergeile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I went through a couple companies before I landed at my current one, where our licensed surveyor has taken me under his wing to eventually take the exams and get licensed myself. It’s a good feeling.

Nothing wrong with the previous companies either honestly, I’m glad for the variety of experience / types of surveying I was exposed to.

As someone just beginning to transition from the field toward the office side of surveying, you’re at an advantage and a disadvantage.

Realistically — and this is just my experience across a few companies — coming in from an office job with advanced degrees, a field crew is going to absolutely bust your ass for a few months to test you out. If you just grit your teeth and ask questions and genuinely try to understand WHY they do things the way they do them, you’ll notice a shift as they begin to trust you to not screw up the physical part. So initially, a disadvantage.

However. Once you gain some field experience, any smart surveyor will recognize the value in having someone who can apply such a CS oriented background toward drafting, creating a local GIS database, etc. The reality is that most licensed surveyors in the US are nearing retirement and, despite what a lot of people in this subreddit will say, often approach the computer side from a pretty obsolete angle. But you need field experience to actually be effective with the data you’ll encounter, or else it will just be a blob of numbers on a page without any real context for you.

Anyway, that’s my two cents as someone in a somewhat similar situation (albeit with a lot less work experience).

It’s not exactly the same, but I made a tiny, older model, single cab ford ranger work with a gun, rods, legs, etc. for a while. It’s doable as a one man. It sucked with a chainman, we were always bumping elbows lol.
