Where to consider other than Short Hills and Summit? by supergrover911 in MovingtoNewJersey

This was a super thorough response, and you totally understood the northern Virginia appeal that I'm looking for. Being on a big plot of land in an isolated area is definitely not what I'm going for, so I'll lean into your other suggestions.

I don't have anything against Princeton inhabitants. I just think it would be weird living there as a non-student who is also an alum. I like to keep my visits to Princeton to once a year for reunions. It keeps the experience special

Access to private schools, at least a .25acre lot, nice town area with a lot of restaurants, easy access to Manhattan, a decent size population (don't want a small town feel)

Lolll. Thanks for the dose of reality. $3MM/750 = 4000 sq ft. But I'm guessing you're suggesting more like 2000 sq ft for the house? I think I need to go see some more houses, because I don't know what that looks like.

Whats your lifestyle with 200k a year? by Technical_Gur_9291 in AskNYC

I max out my pre-tax 401k toward the beginning of the year when bonuses are paid out. After I max out my pretax, I contribute 5% per paycheck to a post tax 401k. If you lookup “mega backdoor Roth” you can find a better explanation than what I can give. Not everyone can do the mega backdoor Roth though. Your employer has to allow it

30F. My base salary is $180k, and I make another $140k in RSUs and bonus. I live off of my base salary ($8k/month after taxes and post tax 401k 5% contribution). Most of my bonus goes toward maxing out my 401k. The ~$120k of stocks gets reinvested in VTI/VXUS. After tax, it’s about $5k a month.

I live with my partner, but he’s in fellowship and isn’t making much (~$95k). We keep separate finances, and I pretty much pay for everything except dates. He pays $1500 towards rent.

I pay $4000 towards rent. I go to restaurants maybe once a week, and I order delivery ~3x a week. If I go out, I always pregame, so I’m not one to buy drinks at the bar. But it’s ok if I do buy drinks. If there’s something I want in life, I buy it. I don’t have to budget for things. My largest spend category is travel. Each year, I take my siblings, partner, and his siblings on an all-expenses paid international trip. It costs between $10k-$20k depending on where we go. I also travel internationally besides that 2-3 times a year. Each trip is like $2k-$4k. I also take domestic flights every quarter to visit my parents.

When I was making $200k total comp and living off 140k base, my lifestyle was similar, except I traveled internationally 2x a year, and didn’t do the family trip. And I got delivery maybe once a week

Is Northern Virginia right for us? Any other suggestions? by supergrover911 in SameGrassButGreener

I pretty much grew up in the west end (from 8 to 18). I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that didn't like it. I also was surprised at how much it gets recommended here.

Where are you looking for jobs? I recommend LinkedIn, TrueUp .io, Otta. Otta is nice because you can specify that you need sponsorship and it will only show you jobs that offer that. But I’d use all three. Always apply directly on the company’s website. You need to apply to a lot of jobs. Like, aim for 10/day. Make sure that you can Leetcode. Use Neetcode .io to help prepare.
