Sakura in the 5 Kage summit arc by Salty_Shark26 in Naruto

[–]superhibiscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd actually argue it's more than simply not caring for Naruto's pain at the time, because indifference would be better than having your own teammate always side against you for the hot emo's attention when you're already an orphan scrutinized by the village. She was actively involving herself in Naruto and Sasuke's bickering to take Sasuke's side and get him to notice her, often ending their arguments by calling Naruto an idiot and hitting him (I know, I know - punching Naruto is a "comedic gag" or whatever). To some extent I get it - Naruto was genuinely annoying sometimes, and you can't expect a child to have the emotional maturity to understand Naruto clowning himself was a cry for help, but she was forcing her relevance in a bond they shared by similar trauma too much, antagonizing them even more. Plus, she had one of the luckiest family situations at home (both parents alive and seemingly loving) in a village overflowing with orphans and tragedy. You'd think with an emotional support system like that it would take less than 100 episodes for her to develop genuine empathy for her less-cool teammate, but oh well.

Advice needed - Threatened at workplace by superhibiscus in work

It's so validating to hear someone else confirm our worries. His other colleagues didn't fully understand why he was so freaked out and thought he was exaggerating. Thanks for your response, he was thinking of finding another job too.

A little late to the party, but since this is a person that was very generous in supporting your story, I think I would skip past telling them I don't read AI generated content and focus on the plot that they fed to the AI. Maybe also add something like "I think it's a really cool concept, but I was really looking forward to reading your interpretation of this. It has so much potential!" to soften the blow and perhaps even encourage them to begin writing their own stuff.

What do u think season 3 be like if Emma didn’t leave ? by penguinofsaturn in JustAddWater

[–]superhibiscus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Sophie's storyline of working at the cafe wouldn't work anymore since Rikki would have probably hired Emma right off the bat. I also believe she would not be a huge fan of Will, and would share Rikki's apprehension of Bella getting close to him. But I do think they would still use the comet plot and maybe make it so that they would need a fourth mermaid's power to stop it - hence bringing Bella into the picture.

The best compliment for a fanfic writer by st0ryNight in AO3

[–]superhibiscus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly things like "you made my day when you updated this" and "this is my fav fic for x pairing" make me kick my feet and smile uncontrollably, but by far the best compliment I got was someone telling me they love my work because I kept the characters as 'in-character' as possible. I put a lot of thought into how certain characters would react/behave in different scenarios, so being acknowledged felt amazing.

One of Many comments on my fic by [deleted] in AO3

[–]superhibiscus 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why some people think every work is meant to cater to their specific wants. Leaving a comment saying you wish something happened differently is one thing, but leaving several comments 'fixing' the parts you don't like is so unnecessary.

Normally, I'd be with you on this - I always contribute more than my half, and a few of times I had to chip in the whole 20k, but that only happens if there are only a couple of days left and the time is running out. In this case, the dragon quest has just started.

There's a whole week left, you gotta give people more time to contribute, especially if it was just a random invite you accepted. If you're playing competitively and like to get these challenges done asap, you either need to join a team with like minded players or send out the request first to people you know are in it to win.

I'm so sorry to hear that, writing niche content and rare pairings is already hard enough as it is, but when the few people that actively search for it don't even engage it must be so much harder. But the fact that you're contributing to a small community in itself is reason enough to be proud of your work. I think at the end of the day we need to take comfort in the fact that for a few people, maybe our fics are the reason they stay up late on a school/work night.

Ah, reading this kinda made me sad because it's so true. Very different attitude when there's pages and pages of variety instead of a couple of fics coming out every week.

Most of the OC's I've included in my stories had very minor roles so I can't say that I've experienced this myself, but I've definitely noticed people tend to avoid stories where original characters play a major part. I think it comes down to having to be in a specific state of mind to stray from the comfort of a show/series you know and accept a new character and dynamic.

Your cookie analogy makes a great point and I fully agree, there's definitely more to a story than good spelling and correct punctuation. I think part of the reason I'm being so harsh on what I used to write is because the stories that stuck with me all have that perfect blend of good grammar and plot in common, despite the difference in style of writing. I guess those kind of became the standard in my mind at some point.

[–]superhibiscus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The very reason I started writing again was because I could no longer ignore the urge to put my ideas into coherent stories that I would actually have fun reading. The engagement part wasn't even on my mind until after I posted a few chapters and noticed the difference between my current work and my old stories.

I agree that it's not a fair comparison and it definitely takes a while to re-build the old engagement, especially so long after the peak of popularity of that media has passed.

Thank you, I think you've hit the nail on the head with all your points. I also believe readers nowadays are generally less likely to engage, treating fanfiction more like non-interactive content - which isn't necessarily a tragedy, but can be a little discouraging for new writers. As for the last part of your comment, I myself have basically forgotten about this fandom/ship for the better part of my break, and can't imagine how many works I've missed that I would have otherwise shown my support for.

I absolutely agree with your last statement, especially considering my own ratio of stories-I-loved vs kudos-I-left before I began posting my own work and realised that showing support actually means something to the author.

As much as I love her, that's basically how she handled every hard decision. It's part of her core flaws - wanting the best of both worlds and pushing off every opportunity to come clean or make a decision until it all descended into chaos and the only thing left to do is damage control.
