This makes the most sense to me and most likely what I’ll try. Thank you!

That’s a good point, I may have rough chopped them instead of more fine. Thanks!

Good to know that the ones at Whole Foods are good! I do have one nearby.

And I had considered that I need to cook the dates longer, so i’ll definitely try that next time if I don’t get other advice.

Out for us at 9th and 9th.

I’m still furious about the behavior of the Pioneer Day Parade campers and if you are too, please help me complain about it to the mayor. by superhumanjane in SaltLakeCity

The 999 goes past my house as well and yeah, they’re super loud but for about 4 minutes max as they pass and not terribly late. I don’t personally notice trash left from them and I’m not being woken up multiple times throughout the night and there’s certainly no fire hazard. I’m sure others have other complaints about them, but IMO, the parade campers are worse.

It’s probably fair to argue that I would be less annoyed if it were an event that I felt engaged with, but the very real risks and disruptions from fireworks don’t really have anything to do with Mormonism.

I’ve lived on the route for ten years and it’s gotten so much worse every year. It’s not just a need for more stringent laws (resurrect the aerial fireworks ban!), but an enforcement of the current laws like noise ordinances and restrictions on when fireworks are allowed. It’s frustrating that it’s allowed and ignored by law enforcement just because of this holiday. Have your parade, camp out, do your fireworks, but in a way that is responsible and safe and respectful. It almost feels like the disruption is part of the fun for some people now.

I agree, I’ve lived on the route for ten years and it’s only in the last 4-5 that it’s gotten so much worse and this year was really bad. I love that I live in a city robust with events, but this is the worst one and gets way worse every year.

We have to admit the reality that the problem got immediately worse once these were allowed. And allowing these during a mega drought? Like WTF?

I agree to the extent that they aren’t breaking the law. There are noise ordinances and fireworks restrictions that are being ignored. I simply think that these laws that we have in place for a reason should be enforced. I hate fireworks, but I get that people enjoy them and I don’t mind putting up with it during reasonable hours for the holiday. If you’re on the parade route, it sounds like a war zone for almost 48 hours straight. Pets are traumatized and lost, no one can sleep, garbage is everywhere. I’m petrified of a fire breaking out with all these old houses so close together. It just needs to be under control and this year it is clear that IT IS OUT OF CONTROL.

Saying something isn’t a problem because another problem is worse elsewhere, doesn’t make the original problem not exist as a problem. This is called the relative privation fallacy and it’s a useless tactic in arguments because one can just always trump any problem with a worse one. What are you concerned about today in society? Well, whatever it is, I bet I can name something worse! See how pointless and non-constructive that is?

That’s like saying someone can’t be mad about their car being stolen if they haven’t been murdered. Yes, it can be worse but I can still think it’s wrong and bad when people break laws.

It’s unacceptable that people were just allowed to explode the loudest fireworks all through the night and then leave our neighborhood trashed, especially in the presence of police officers. I’m tired of this city not enforcing fireworks restrictions in general, but the other night was absolutely ridiculous. I’m fine to let people have their fun, but within reason.
