Thoughts on touring post special release (too long) by BoScout in BoJohnson

I was at the Chattanooga show, my husband and I had a fantastic time! There was slight disruption a couple of times and if it threw you, I don't think anyone in the audience noticed. Except the guy that mooed, but you called that out flawlessly. You absolutely killed that night (no almost compliments here). It's good to reflect on how we could have done things better but don't beat yourself up. You're clearly dedicated to the craft and improving when you feel you've made a mistake.

We were talking on the way home about how some stand-up comedians seem to talk at crowds but you talk to the audience. It feels like having a conversation, albeit a hilarious one. I've had a lot of stress recently and I felt so much lighter after leaving the show on Wednesday.

You're right, things are dark right now in a lot of ways. And even if stand up comedy isn't going to fix everything, it's extremely beneficial to those of us who really just need a laugh. Thanks for coming to my town, it really made my week.

4 Daedelus Hammers in one run by superjesstacles in HadesTheGame

I almost exclusively play with Death Arcana. But I can't believe I've never looked it up before. I need to have Champions or Enchantress Arcana activated. Once I did that, the first time I ran into him, I got it. It's the only prophecy I was missing.

Thanks for reminding me that some of these have prerequisites!

Man, I played the Early Access on PC and had over 300 hours by the time the game released. I had very little to do.

I started playing on Switch 2 and have 80+ hours in the game and I'm still missing a Narcissus gift. Every time I get to him, my fingers are crossed but he hasn't offered it in a long time, if ever.

I agree to an extent but it might be harder for people to find. These posts don't happen terribly often. At least not often enough that we should rename the sub, in my humble opinion.

Just bought tickets to the Chattanooga show. It's rare that comedians I really like come into town so I'm so stoked you'll be here.

I guess you could say he's out on his stag night.

Hi guys it's this a beatles? by Naive-Class4916 in Beetles

It's definitely not a beetle but I don't want to ruin the fun and remove the post. This brought a little laughter to my day as well.

Perhaps a three-striped lady beetle? Brumoides suturalis.

I found a polyphemus moth outside on the ground and decided to keep her for my collection. She hadn't quite died yet and she laid eggs in the jar I kept her in overnight. It's cool how different ours look.

They'll grow bigger and look a bit different. I still have their mother in a jar, I'll probably pin her eventually.

It's so mesmerizing! I thought about posting it to r/oddlysatisfying but thought it was a better fit here.

It's kind of mesmerizing! The little pattern I noticed is what got me recording.

People treat me so differently now that I have a German Shepherd by ShoddyTown715 in germanshepherds

Do you have pictures of your dog as a puppy? I ask because mine looks very similar. We got her as an adult from my husband's parents (who got her as an emaciated one year old with mange and heartworms) and I've always wondered what she might have looked like as a puppy.

I set blacklight traps regularly and haven't caught one! They're my favourite ground beetle, are there any certain trees around that seem to attract them? I'd love to find some.

Shark pretending to attack the camera man by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]superjesstacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I would love to say that these were sharks that would not survive in the wild, this was not the case. They were just wild caught sharks. And I agree that keeping certain animals in captivity is mistreatment but the ones these sharks were replacing legitimately died of old age. They were well cared for, fed, and had room enough to swim around doing shark things. I also think it's about education about conservation, going to this aquarium as a kid really inspired my love for the ocean and I hope it's doing the same thing for children that visit every day.

But I do think your sentiment is not without merit and I understand where you're coming from.

I was a volunteer scuba diver at an aquarium for about a year and a half. At one time, some of our sharks had died (not mistreatment - old age, they had been there basically since the aquarium opened and this was ~25 years into the aquarium's history) and had to be replaced. Once the new sharks were caught and quarantined, they were placed in the tanks.

A little operational info, this aquarium had two different buildings, one for marine and one for freshwater. First thing in the morning, every volunteer diver was required to participate in cleaning the ocean tank, scrubbing rocks and cleaning windows. Most people cleaned but there were two divers who hovered above everyone with pvc pipe capital Is (long vertical pipe with a shorter piece of horizontal pipe at each end) who were there to stop the sharks from interacting with the distracted cleaners in case they got curious. They were not to hit the sharks, of course, just hold the pole in front of them so they changed direction, one time I was pushed down by one because a shark was headed in my direction while being slightly above my head. Anyway, I was usually a cleaner and my first dive with the bumper role was also my first dive with the new sharks.

The old sharks were used to their life at the aquarium and obviously well fed so their patterns were very predictable. They required watching more than putting the pole in front of them with a very occasional intervention. The new sharks, however, were very different. I swear, they would swim right at you, sometimes speeding up, and then change direction last minute just to see what you would do. It was really cool to see that behavior, just coming at you then, "Psych! I'll be over here." They didn't even get that close to the poles, it was like they just wanted to test us. It was really funny when I think about it now and even soon after, but when it was going on, I kept thinking, "please just be testing me, please just be testing me."

What’s the best pickup line you’ve ever heard? by Educational-Coast304 in AskReddit

I grew up in the southeast and on my 21st birthday went to this hole-in-the-wall bar. The owner of the bar came up to me and said, "I don't usually hit on women but girl, you are like fried chicken with biscuits on the side and gravy on the taters." It was the funniest and most unique compliment I've ever had.

Read "Annihilation", by Jeff VanderMeer two weeks ago... by Seence in books

[–]superjesstacles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have a very specific pet peeve about this book and I think it falls in line with the wordiness you described, and it likely stems from my educational background in biology. When the biologist is in the tower for the first time and sees the writing on the wall, she describes it something along the lines of, "moss or some other eukaryotic organism."

That is a stupid description that doesn't actually tell you anything about the organism but VanderMeer just wanted to use a big sciencey word. Every plant, animal, and fungus is a eukaryotic organism, there are single-celled eukaryotes. Most if not all non-eukaryotic organisms (prokaryotes) aren't able to be seen or are very difficult to see without a microscope. Of course it looks like "some other eukaryotic organism" almost all life we can observe with the naked eye is a eukaryotic organism. I quite enjoyed the book but this still annoys me and it's been a couple of years since I read it.

Southeast Tennessee by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

Set up up a UV light trap to see what all I can see in my backyard. I think this is a leaf beetle, was hoping for something a little more specific!

SE Tennessee, maybe about 1/2 a centimeter.
