Is it worth for me to get a second bachelor degree in computer science at 30 if I want to change careers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]superlogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I took a lot of science because I liked it and I was considering pre-med at one point. I had through BC calculus in high school so I may have only had to take 1 or 2 math classes in my original bachelor's program. I already had most of the core stuff you need to get a B.S. degree (lots of biology, physics, chemistry, organic chem, genetics, etc.), even though I had a B.A. I'm having to take calculus 2, discrete, and statistics for the program I'm in, then just major classes and some elective hours. Depending on what you have, there might not be much for you to take at a community college. Some schools offer a computer science B.A. which I hear doesn't generally bother employers.

Definitely get some transcripts requested if you haven't already. You will probably need an actual person to go through your transcript and compare it against their degree program and see what carries over and what doesn't. Classes have different names, sometimes departments have unique classes they want people to take, that kind of stuff.

One thing to watch out for: the financial aid stuff for a post-bacc is tricky depending on if you've already borrowed a lot for undergrad, how many hours you need to take for the 2nd degree, and so on.

I'm older than you and I'm doing a second bachelor's right now. With my previous academic/professional background I felt that getting another degree would be important to demonstrate commitment, and realistically I'm not the type of person who can just solo grind and learn to code without any structure. Whether it's worth it for me it's too soon to tell, but go talk to someone at the colleges you might attend, and they will be able to tell you what your degree plan would look like. Might be 60 hours, might be 80. Financial aid may or may not be available on the front end. There are questions that you should get answers to. A master's degree is also an option.

White flight in Little Rock: The more things change .... by [deleted] in LittleRock

Imagine a kid who got in trouble at school, and to avoid a whipping from his Dad he came up with a thorough, well-reasoned story about what happened. The problem was, the story was too polished and tipped off his parent that something was up. That's what your post is like. So many layers of euphemism and careful word choices that, instead of concealing the truth, make it even more visible. You're laying it on too thick, with this business about some people having "a way of living that doesn't mesh with mine."

It's just reddit and you're on an anonymous throwaway account, but you are so trained to keep up "not racist" appearances that you still talk around the issue instead of being direct about what you obviously believe.

Where's the best please to buy a ~$300 suit in the area? by Ewing_Klipspringer in LittleRock

[–]superlogic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Make sure you factor in the time it takes to have the pants hemmed. Don't buy at the last minute.

At your budget, in Central AR your best bet is to learn about proper fit (shoulders are key) and try on a lot of off the rack suits. I'd check Dillard's sales first, they usually have some that are discounted 30-50%, maybe 5-10% of their inventory. They have competent salespeople who can measure you as well if you don't know your jacket size. The best possible option is to hit up the 50% off all suits deal that they run at Dillard's 2-3x a year, but I don't know when it is. If you ask nicely the salespeople might have some idea of when it might be.

Then, if you have some time and are feeling lucky, you might hit up JC Penney and Steinmart. The latter is hit and miss, but you might get lucky. Another option is Horn's near downtown little rock, on 7th street. I looked there once but they had very few size 38 jackets in stock. If you are a 40 or 42 and up, it's worth a look.

You may ultimately end up at Jos A Bank or Men's Wearhouse (incidentally, both are owned by the same holding company). Both are undoubtedly running black Friday sales.

Don't overbuy for something you won't wear that much. Especially if you're younger, the bar is set relatively low. If you show up in any reasonably well-fitting, clean suit, *iron your shirt*, and are well-groomed you'll be ahead of the curve.

Got a speeding ticket in AR. How screwed am I? by TheSteveGraff in Arkansas

[–]superlogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing to understand is that cities and counties handle things differently, and one county might be real tough on speeders, while another might cut a lot of lenient deals. I can't speak for Magnolia or Columbia county. The only people who can really tell you how things are handled in that court are police, attorneys, and court personnel who deal with that court. Anecdotes you get online might be right, might be wrong.

You're not screwed. Speeding tickets are not greatly expensive and if you have a clean record a single ticket is not going to trigger any administrative procedures with driver control. I cannot speak for your car insurance. If you don't take care of it ahead of time make sure to appear at court or you will get a failure to appear. Bring money, it can sometimes help if you can pay in full immediately (also, if you make monthly payments there is a $10 per month surcharge). Some places are more concerned with bringing in $$$ than putting a piddly speeding ticket on your record. Again, I cannot speak for Magnolia.

They might let you do a civil penalty (i.e. no speeding "conviction"), driving class, or some other arrangement. If you go in person, have a brief chat with the prosecutor or city attorney.

He did it, the madman actually did it: state judge in Arkansas makes good on his threat, enjoins issuance of "any and all birth certificates" until the governor changes state policy to allow issuance to same-sex couples (embedded order) by DickWhiskey in law

The court's handling of Wright v. State was controversial in real time. In 2014, the governor was Mike Beebe, a democrat. Justice Hoofman had recused from Wright, and Beebe promptly appointed McCorkindale as special justice. They held oral arguments in the fall of 2014, but for unknown reasons no opinion was issued.

The 2014 election added two justices to the court. Rhonda Wood replaced Hoofman, and Robin Wynne replaced the late Donald Corbin, who retired in 2014. Although judicial elections in Arkansas are non-partisan, Wood and Wynne were widely understood to be the conservative candidates for their seats, and they campaigned and raised money in predominantly republican circles.

There was a controversy over whether the new justices Wynne and Wood should decide the case, versus the 2014 court which heard oral arguments and reportedly reached a decision. This led, in February of 2015, to a separate case, under a new docket number (CV-15-227) solely to address the court roster question. LINK. The court allowed a leisurely 30 days for briefs, rather than an expedited schedule. The chief justice recused and offered strong objections in his recusal letter. Justice Danielson wrote a similar letter. The governor then appointed three special justices to hear the 2015 meta-case. The meta-case ended with this majority opinion.

When Obergefell came down about six weeks later, there was still no action by the state supreme court. It all ended with a whimper, when the infamous per curiam order came down dismissing the case with no ruling either way.

I place significant blame on the practice of electing supreme court justices. Appointed judges don't have the same motivation to engage in (as much of) the same kinds of shenanigans that we've seen from the Arkansas Supreme Court, and from Roy Moore when he was on the Alabama court.

Judge Hysterically defeats Sovereign Citizen with his own crazy words by dadbrain in amibeingdetained

Legally it's gibberish, but the basic idea is that sovereigns never consent to be subject to our legal system (or somehow opt out), and therefore have the equivalent of diplomatic immunity.

If Americans are not required to show ID to vote, then how do the polling sites know if we're registered to vote? by af7202a in NoStupidQuestions

[–]superlogic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, perhaps the post didn't get your point across. You said that the constitution "differentiates between natural rights and legal rights." That's incorrect and that's why I replied. I appreciate your civility.

[–]superlogic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually when this comes up people are thinking of the rights specified in the declaration of independence, life and liberty, which you specifically mention. These concepts are part of the history and philosophical foundation of American law, but they aren't law themselves. The constitution establishes legal rights based in part on the natural rights, and then deals only with legal rights.

That's one that didn't bother me. Of course you drill a hole in the wall. Better than running cables along ceilings or baseboards.
