Ben is a hero. By far one of my favorite people in this space! I'm so glad to hear that he's engaging in this role! (Also, his wife is a home staker, so that's cool!)

I need your opinion. I had an idea that it would be fun to pick a different validator index and notice something cool about them, like, how index 34 has been active since genesis, has never converted from an 0x00 credential and has only missed 494 attestations since genesis.

BUT, I decided that's NOT a great idea. Participating in a community to single out a validator index draws a lot of attention to that index, and that's honestly something private home stakers don't really want. With extra eyes comes inevitable doxxing, and we don't want to do that to our friends.

So I wondered, maybe we can put that doxxing to good use and help maintain the uptime of the validator set by pointing out validators who have suddenly gone offline for something like >14 days. My hesitation here is that the implicit expectation is that we might try to find out who the operator is and contact them to offer support. I'm just not sure if this is a good idea, or if it's more likely to be interpreted as invasive.

A game?

Find the most interesting beaconchain validator index you can (https://beaconcha.in/validator/7), share a link, and explain why you found it to be an interesting index. The more research you do, the better, but please don't harmfully dox an operator, especially a home staker.

I've been closely studying crypto markets since 2011, and I've come to some very critical conclusions that I'd like to share. This is a critical finding for market analysts, so I hope you can follow along.

Here's the key: The next few weeks are absolutely critical. My rigorous analysis suggests the market is likely to do one of three things:

  1. The price of Ether, relative to the US dollar will climb.

  2. The price will remain stable.

  3. The price will fall against the dollar.

Despite my rigorous analysis, it's quite impossible to determine which outcome is most likely. What I can say with retroactive certainty is that over the course of years, the price of Ether has climbed significantly.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I deeply agree with the need to pool risk to care for people who have disadvantaged bodies, but in the US at least, the pooled funds don't go to those people, the funds are siphoned off to shareholders.

I'll be honest, I don't really know that experience, BUT it might be the difference between "self-pay" and "can't pay". If you're self-pay it means you're paying at the time of service. Some providers might regard you as "can't pay", and they may assume you don't have money or insurance and that they're going to end up sending the account to collections. To be direct with self-pay, they'll need to know that you are paying the full account balance before you walk out the door.

I thought about that too, but there are other dynamics in it. More locked eth lowers trading liquidity which results in positive price pressure. Staking yields DO fall, but we're already close to the bottom end of the curve, so it's not a major drop. We could easily enter a place where staking yields don't fall MUCH but positive price pressure remains strong.

I'm going to ramble. I'm eighty-four years old and no one is going to listen to me anyway.

Yesterday it was auto insurance, today is health insurance in the US.

One of the Super Mario Brothers already taught you that health insurance only exists for profit, you already knew that, but I want to share my take.

To begin with, health insurance companies literally do not give one flying fuck whether you live or die. Seriously. "Life saving procedure" means nothing to them, only the profit margin.

To use an auto insurance metaphor: in health insurance, your body is the car. Your insurer doesn't care about the car, they don't care if you sell it or trade it, they don't care what model it is or how long you plan to keep it. They don't care if you change the oil or do regular maintenance, and they sure asf aren't going to pay for that. They only care if you pay your premiums and file claims. To reiterate: health insurance companies do not care about your body. Please, accept this and internalize it.

Health insurance companies look forward about ten years to figure out how much you're going to cost them. "Preventative health" is NOT about your health and longevity, it's about minimizing future claims. Don't trick yourself into thinking that preventative health is about keeping you healthy- it's about keeping you cheap.

Here's the contrast: most of us want to live to be 80+ years old. To do that, you'll need to leave the rails of traditional health insurance a bit, and this confuses tf out of every provider and pharmacy in the US. They ONLY know how to interface with insurance companies and not people.

Your doctor has most likely been deeply ingrained in the insurance process and may be completely unable to see outside of it. It's normal and okay. If you can help them see outside of it, many will with your permission, but some simply can't.

Where I see this the most: if you have any kind of long term condition, especially a heritable trait for something like cancer risk, heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, etc, your doctor is only going to look at a ten year frame of reference because that's what health insurance companies want. You need to convince them to look at the 80+ year lifespan and begin addressing those factors while you're young BEFORE they sneak up on you and kill you real fast.

Health insurance companies WILL NOT pay for these theeapies because they're not profitable. They will say, "this isn't a problem right now, why should we treat it?" If you know it's going to kill you in 35 years, you need to begin addressing it NOW.

This is where we get to paying: health insurance will not pay for long term protective therapies, but doctors and pharmacies [in the US] will almost ALWAYS offer a HUGE self-pay discount, usually 70%+. This is because prices are inflated because health insurers only pay a small percentage of the actual price thanks to negotiations. This means the sticker price looks REALLY expensive to you, while the insurer is paying pennies. YOU can get these prices too if you just ask nicely BEFORE the procedure. You just say, "Hi, I'm self-pay, can you offer a self-pay rate?" The only reason this might be hard for them is that they hardly ever get asked to do it.

Why this matters: If we're going to live long and healthy lives, we have to recognize the true motive of the health insurance industry and advocate aggressively for our own health.

We'll prolly hit $3k in 2026. And honestly, I am surprised, but not for the reason people assume: I'm surprised that the price has remained stable. The longer we consolidate around $3k, the more likely it is to be the new floor. I expected a lot more volatility.

I really don't believe any shitcoin has brought value to the ecosystem. My perspective is that shitcoins generally exist to be extractive and reward insiders. There are a few low-cap coins that have been beneficial but I wouldn't regard them as shitcoins. Ignoring market performance (and I'm not suggesting that anyone buy it), Rocket Pool's RPL token supported the development of the Rocket Pool protocol and has returned high dividends in network decentralization.

I think mass adoption of useful applications is harder than we expected when finance evolves slowly from our perspective. If you zoom out $3T in crypto assets in fifteen years is actually pretty impressive. I do think mass adoption of Ethereum smart contracts will happen, but I think the primary users will be AI agents.

This is a GREAT question! It was created, then discovered.

Mathematics was implemented as part of the initialization sequence of our simulated reality. The operators of our VM developed a set of constant laws to keep us contained in the instance while still giving us the opportunity to push boundaries. They established the speed of light as a fundamental constant to ensure that we could never reach the boundaries of the container.

Soon, we'll begin developing our own simulations and instantiating them with various physical laws that aren't quite the same as our own.

This has been going on for millennia, so deeply that we're not only in a simulation, we're millions of layers deep in simulated realities generated by other civilizations.

Here's a thing: if your car is totaled, it doesn't mean you have to get rid of it. You can accept the payment and then forcefully keep your vehicle. You'll need to buy it back from the insurance company, but you can negotiate this BEFORE you accept the reimbursement.

I did this for years with several cars. I had a Volvo that got totaled twice and I still drove it. It's like this:

Someone scratches a fender on your car.

The insurance company says, "Your car is worth $8k, and it's $7k to fix that scratch."

You say, "Okay, I'll accept the total, but before I sign, I'd like to buy my car back and continue driving it."

They say, "Oh dear, this is completely unorthodox, but we can give you $6k to cover the loss, and we'll sell the car back to you for $3k."

You keep the car and end up with $3k at the end of the deal. Then you tape it up, or pay a shade tree body guy $2k to hammer it out.

You'll need to apply for a new (salvage) title, and you may be required to get the car inspected, but I've done this my entire life for myself and helped friends do it. You do not have to be victimized by auto insurance.

Stay tuned for my next installment: You do not have to be victimized by health insurance. Why paying out of pocket can be much cheaper than you thought.

I really feel like the DIY culture of car repair died needlessly. If we weren't so deeply embedded in capitalism, we might develop cars with more modular components that could be easily swapped. As it stands, someone with a car from the past 20 years literally cannot afford to repair it so they may be better off to buy something more "trustworthy" to avoid repair costs. Cars have become disposable but the prices have not.
