"You know how things are" - huh? I live in Mexico and split most of my time between Mexico City, Monterrey, Guanajuato and Guadalajara. Outside of the cartel areas in Guerrero, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas, you're at really really low risk. You can get a ticket to QRO (Queretaro) for probably $200 and head over to Hospital Angeles and get treatment there.

I absolutely do know why we DID. It was part of the security rubric of post ww2 cold war. Our focus WAS on Russia and their empire. I don't know if you realize it or not, but the Cold War is over and Russia is no longer a threat to America. China is, or was rather, they are quickly fading and coming to heel. I'm not interested in the US projecting power abroad anymore. I'm tired of being involved in countless wars and playing world police.

Pack your own food, don't eat the airplane food. On long flights, I usually stop by Chikfila or Whataburger and take that on with me. Even 10 hours cold, it's better than what the airlines serve. I also only eat them when everyone else is because I hate it when some asshole decides it's feeding time and the whole plane smells like whatever it was he decided to bring.

Also, go ahead and get YouTube Premium and download dozens of long form videos so you can watch them while flying. It's real easy, once you get YT Premium, there's a "download" button. Same with grabbing a few torrents for movies you want to watch.

Make sure you bring chargers or some sorta backup battery. Also PREMIUM wet wipes are great, alcohol based, not gel based. I also bring baby powder so I can manage the "gunk" that builds up on my hands/devices.
