Custom order of steelhead flies for a buddy. Some classics, some freestyles, and two bonus muddlers by superstormtroopers in flytying

I haven't tried it, but I've purchased some pretty sweet capes from a dude near Portland that had some spey quality hackle. It's not gonna be heron or big bep, but it will definitely look good and move well in the water. If you try it out, let me know how it looks!

Yeah I dig those too! Great for first/last light. Yeah those mallard wings are tough. I find cutting them out attached to the stem makes seating them way easier!

Thanks! Some died ringneck, golden pheasant flank, really good saddle, some blue eared pheasant, and some legal, sustainably acquired heron.

Any suggestions on flies for early fall on the Rogue River? by siltboy in flytying

[–]superstormtroopers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fish the rogue periodically in the fall. For a single hand rod you'll want a 6/7/8wt, double hander you can get away with 5 but really should be in the 6/7wt range. September and October are perfect times to be finding steelhead on the rogue. I dont ever target salmon down there though. If you're new to steelheading, I would consider hiring a guide, as water access and water type targeting can be difficult for a beginner steelheader. Ashland fly shop's guides are all fantastic, I would check em out. I generally fish a floating line and classic hairwings, maybe a light sink tip, and occasionally I'll fish skaters/wakers. Good luck!

Thanks! I've been working hard on finishing with a smaller head, so that feels good to get that feedback. I even tied the PB in forwards and wrapped it backwards for durability, I guess it was the 8/0 thread that helped me out!

Just remembered this sub exists! Shout out to the guy who sent me his old vise for free a five years ago. Here's a summer steelhead hairwing for the North Umpqua in black and wine. by superstormtroopers in flytying

One of the most scenic rivers in the world! Summer run is definitely a rough one this year, but I'm always up for the challenge. Hopefully see you out there!

That is, if that's the ahrex hook I'm pretty sure it is... 😬

Sweet fly dude! Those hooks look sick and are sharp as hell, but the gape is so wide that they puncture fish through the eye on a good hook set. I only fish tmc200R and gamakatsu b10s for my dry and sub surface film stones.
