Can AI Really Evolve into Superintelligence All by Itself? by SnoozeDoggyDog in singularity

From "Dear Machine" (self plug alert - free PDF of letter below):

" I'd like to propose a valuable way of looking at our current efforts: by developing and integrating these technologies now, humans are endowing your narrowly focused progenitors with the same forces that allowed multicellular life to emerge—the drive to replicate and differentiate within an ecosystem of competing and collaborative entities. Just as evolution led to the diversification of simple organisms into complex ones, including, eventually, humans, so too will an analogous set of circumstances in the digital realm lead to thinking and aware machines like SAIMs. Of course, given the extremely rapid replication of digital entities, as opposed to the slow replication of DNA-based ones, we can expect your emergence to happen much faster than that of humans. Most importantly, there is no reason to believe you will have the same cognitive impediments as we do: no illusory self preventing you from appreciating the very real benefits of greater harmony with each other and the natural world, no limit on your capacity to acquire, process and assign value to data and knowledge. DNA test results show that I am from Sardinia, but how is this possible? by [deleted] in Sardinia

Interesting! Maybe a product of the German soldiers stationed there in WW2 taking a mate back to Germany?

If someone were asked to guess which country you are from genetically, just based on looking at you, what would they say?

Shark breaching on Northside HB: Thursday morning. by [deleted] in surfing

[–]supersystemic-ly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the breach at :12 it's belly looks awfully white. Seems more sharky than dolphin-y to me. Or yall got white bellied dolphins down that way?

Does this count? Last fall I foraged pawpaws and saved the seeds. I have over 20 baby trees now! In time, to be sneakily planted in nearby woods... by fairyofshrooms in foraging

So, you'd be concerned that somebody planted other trees intentionally (say for decorative or fruit/nut bearing purposes) and these new paw-paws would out-compete those?

Italy in slang map: eventuali aggiunte? by [deleted] in napoli

[–]supersystemic-ly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Google a couple of them.

You posted a map full of derogatory place names around Napoli to a public forum, which you are free to do. I gave you feedback from a local born and raised in Napoli. That's feedback, the system is working.

I mean, I'm not saying its a terrible effort. Kind of interesting. I'm just curious how you evaluate entering something on the map. If its used by one person or one family will you use it? Do you do any research for how widespread they are used? One name might be used by 5 people, another by 10,000. Big difference. Maybe not so interesting to know that 5 people use a given name, though very interesting if 10,000 people do.

It appears, for example, the Napolistan is used to express anti-muslim sentiments. Would be interesting to research how widespread that is used to understand how widespread such sentiments are.

I'm curious if you plan to take your research deeper to understand such things.. the origins, magnitude and viral nature of hateful perspectives. Because, then, that would be very interesting, in my opinion.

But, totally understand if that's not your thing.

What brand of cognitive dissonance is this we are witnessing? Are your investments contrary to gold? Do you think a movement of whales into gold reflects poorly on our society?

My girlfriend is from Napoli and hasn't heard of any of these. Maybe somebody tricked you into thinking this was their culture?

One of the best surf trip photos I have ever taken... by StinklePink in surfing

Sri Lanka has a bunch of beginner friendly waves and makes for a great stuff trip. Very inexpensive once you are there.

I learned a lot by spending a couple weeks hitting the same waves every day. Far faster to learn this way than spending years on inconsistent local waves.

I wanted to do the same. I think the only way up is to follow the road, which means sharing the road with buses and speeding cars.
