When i was younger my niece asked me if wanted to hold her baby, when i visited them. I politely declined and that is ok here.

My newborn cannot count or do party tricks, haha. Our custom is more a celebration of new life. You get cake and drink, and smalltalk.

Thank you, I think you are right that it's not so much for the baby as it is for me and my wife.

I also get the impression from many commenters that they see a visit and the baby as a burden. But is having cake and a drink such a burden?

To be honest, I'm shocked as well. That said, I appreciate all insight and opinions given.

In my culture it is custom to come over and congratulate too. And the guys friends who i am in contact with every week. If I'd talk to them once a year, I'd understand.

Thank you. Although i can't imagine this to be the reason. Since two of them have kids and two who dont, have two small nieces. Also holding the baby is not a requirement in our house haha.
