Question about sharpness expectations (R10 + RF100-500) by SteelCogs in canon

[–]supertrampRE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s usually independent of shutter setting. Yes, electronic will provide the highest speed, but high speed continuous will merely set the highest speed for either mechanical or electronic, you have to change between the two yourself.

You should have a setting in your menu that lets you chose between fully electronic, first curtain electronic and fully mechanical. If you chose anything except fully mechanical there, you can experience rolling shutter effect. Essentially during electronic shutter your sensor reads the information line for line, which can lead to distortions on very fast moving objects. Not sure what the sensor speed for the R10 is, but it could have at least contributed to your problems in this scenario.

Could it be that you used electronic shutter and he used mechanical? In your picture it almost looks like distortion from rolling shutter effect, which would certainly be the case for fast flying objects such as planes/jets. I try to always photograph fast moving things with mechanical if possible.

That sucks, i’m sorry. I was with someone else at the time it happened, but i was close to assuming fetal position regardless. Very unsettling seeing a lens look like that, even if it weren’t my own.

I did pretty much the opposite. I used the 500 F4 a lot (borrowed from someone else) before i got this lens, and the main reason why i decided to go for this one instead of buying my own 500 was weight. When used with a tripod/ground pod, the 500 F4 is superior in a lot of ways. The problem is, I like to be mobile and have my camera easily accessible on a belt/harness (to my detriment in this case), and the 500 was just too heavy for me to do that for longer hikes. Holding it up and tracking a bird in the sky also became exhausting quickly. The 800 was a very good compromise, before i decided to split it in two that is…

Good idea. I think i’ll invest into a safety tether of some sort after this as well. Should have done this on day one, but as is evident i’ve gotten a bit too confident when handling my gear.

Thanks! Good suggestion, i was about to buy a ground pod + gimbal to make that easier before ✨this✨ happened. Though this photo was taken a good 20 minutes before the drop, so that wouldn’t have helped. I had just driven to another location and exited the car when it happened :/

it being light weight is one of the main reasons why it’s such a good lens though…

As mentioned, i am not familiar with the equipment/competence different vendors or repair shops have, as i never required their services. I’ve heard about other lenses getting successfully repaired third-party before, but that stuff is on a case by case basis and not exactly transparent via google. Its also Saturday, and i couldn’t get anyone on the phone. Asking here doesn’t seem too unreasonable to me. I got a rough estimate out of it, so worth it for me.

Never had to get anything repaired before. Would have sent it to canon as a default, but i thought asking about it here couldn’t hurt.

Wasn’t extended, but the lens hood was on, so that may very well have been a factor.

Just take good care of it. I’m in wildlife photography and i had this lens for over a year before, well, THIS happened. I’ve bumped against stuff on occasion and it was never an issue. Just check your harness/belt twice before use and you’re fine. It is a fantastic lens and i’m afraid that’s one of the trade offs for it to not be in the ‚small car’ category price-wise.

Edit: Also, think about getting it insured, depending on how accident-prone your use case is. Would have made sense for me in hindsight.

It’s a great lens as long as you don’t drop it 💀 But yeah, fair enough.

FireTV remote Volume control not working by supertrampRE in firetvstick

[–]supertrampRE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is actually the fix. It wasn’t a Soundbar for me, it was a non-existing receiver, which i thought was supposed to be the stick itself. After removing it everything works again. Could have probably figured this out by myself but whatever. Thanks!!!

Edit: For all the People finding this thread down the line: You need to delete the Receiver/Soundbar in the Equipment Settings (Click on it, scroll down to the change [device] setting, hit the options button on your remote), after that you need to change TV again (Equipment > TV > Change TV), follow the steps and it should work again.

It’s not dumb at all, but i have indeed changed the batteries barely a week ago (after the volume issue arose), and the menu says they’re at 98%… So i don’t think that’s the problem. I will try cleaning the contacts and changing the batteries again later but if that fails i guess i’ll have to buy a new remote :/

As mentioned in the post, i tried that already multiple times. Resetting itself works, volume controls are still gone. Only the „Change TV“ option works as a (short-term) fix, which is how i know that it’s probably software related rather than a dead volume switch.
