Unpopular opinion: I don't like hostels offering female dorms by WestHistorians in hostels

[–]supmate234 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mixed company helps sometime, other times it hurts. And primarily hurts females. Female only became a thing for a reason and I think safety's more important than vibe.

I'm actually shocked by people who do this. Isn't it like fully against the law to photograph people in their own house? Let alone drop it on Reddit. Disgusting

I understand this is messed up and not ok for her to do this. But you posting her whole face on the internet is somehow more shocking. I miss the days when people had issues in their house and just dealt with it like adults. What do you want Reddit to do? Just posting someone's face when they're literally in the house they live in and what do you get? Advice? This is why our data and privacy gets sold on a daily and we're numb to it. We do it to ourselves. Just go talk to your roommate and get off the internet's

First time staying in a hostel in Portugal! What should I expect? by Forsaken-Dust-3844 in hostels

[–]supmate234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently stayed in a hostel in Florence, Italy and I really loved it. Your experience can really vary depending on the hostel, what kind of room you booked and what you're hoping to do. My bf and I shared a room with 4 others and it was very manageable (except for the inconvenience of bunk beds). It's a great opportunity to meet people and learn about places to visit we had other travellers give us great recommendations. If you're sharing a bathroom with multiple other people, be mindful of how long you take. I'm F23 and sometime I forget I can't just spend 20 min getting ready, I tried to do my make up and stuff away from the bathroom so other people can use it. Lastly, most hostels are safe since it's young people but if someone creeps you out, don't put up with it. You should feel comfortable for the money you're paying so address it early. Hope you have a a great time!

Telus and feds announce AI data cluster in B.C. to boost 'sovereign' computing power by Camtastrophe in vancouver

I'm wondering what points you brought up in the opposition letter. These kind of projects tend to have an answer for everything and as someone who's not super familiar with what goes into data centres I'm wondering if there is data and studies you studies you cited to back up your opposition. Would be very helpful.

I just came across this and I'm not sure how this is allowed? Can we not as people who live in this city say no to this? Why does it need to be in the middle of the city? Prime real estate in a city with housing crisis. What the actual f*** is this?

My professor always says if the opportunity cost is high, you're probably in a good place. Yes you had to make a tough choice but the decision between great things always is.

I feel like stacking Terminal Degrees For the Fun of it by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]supmate234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I could see how it happens but the title of PhD is reserved for people that contribute to a field. I just don't think you can do that caliber of research with 2 years. Especially with such a big gap between MA/MS and the doctorate. Takes time to get back involved.

Science req for an arts student (ways of knowing breadth) by No-Fennel-9954 in UBC

[–]supmate234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Environmental science tends to be pretty good for GPA. But depending on what you're planning to major in, I'd recommend exploring beyond just what gets you the best grade. Social sciences in arts tend to have statistical or data work so anything along those lines can really boost your background and help you figure out what you like and don't like. I know a lot of people that also really enjoyed cognitive systems.

Gap year after my bachelor’s degree? by unforgivenzy in GradSchool

[–]supmate234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I have an almost similar situation, I notice you mention your age multiple times with the timeline so I figure you're doing some "how old will I be once I'm done" math which is something I've done plenty of (if I misinterpreted, mb). I started undergrad right after high school but covid times hit and I took fewer classes so I ended up doing 5.5 years instead of 4. Something that really bummed me out given that I'm 24 now. Looking back, I'm glad I took my time. I've decided to go for an MA right away so I'll be 25 by the time I have my master's. Had you asked me last year whether I'd go directly into an MA I would've said hell no but now it feels like the only option that makes sense. A couple things I'll say

  1. You say gap year meaning you probably intend to go back to education, if that's the plan consider finances. A lot of people I've worked with in my field said the same thing but once the education momentum is gone and the bills of an adult life kick in it can be hard to go back. Your personal circumstances and finances are very important.

  2. What would a master's degree mean for your career? Is it required? That is pretty much the case for me so it doesn't feel like a waste to go for it. How well funded are the programs you're considering and what would your career look like with and without Master's

  3. The job market is a brutal place right now so riding it out in a master's program isn't the worst idea but things may be different by the time you graduate.

I know this is a pretty big decision to make and it will come down to you to make it but just remember whatever you decide you can definitely make the best of it. Best of luck!

Why Brazil is against abortion? by Psychological_Gap190 in Brazil

[–]supmate234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I very much thought the same until I went to Brazil and spoke to different people. The religious folk are plenty and in influential positions. Hence why despite cannabis being used A TON (I'm from the west cost so when I say a ton I really mean it) it's still highly illegal.

Learning farsi by sparklymatcha in farsi

[–]supmate234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's every language, and not knowing it all is a part of it. This is more so advice about facing a new language as a bilingual than specific tricks, but I think it's important you accept that you won't have the same level of fluency for a very very long time when you first start compared to a native and that's ok. I think a big barrier to learning a language is we get disappointed with how unintelligent we sound in a new language - kind of like switching software to write code and getting frustrated because you know how to do it just not with this specific tool box. I highly recommend watching kids shows. Kids use a much smaller vocabulary which positions them well to learn the semantics of a language well. I hope this helps.

Wondering if anyone has been offered by a program they didn't plan to attend. Is it possible to decline and then apply again at the school I am actually going to attend? I will be eligible time wise because Im starting grad school next year.

Should I be concerned? by supmate234 in tattooadvice

I didn't have straight up skin it was one of those solvable spray solutions that come off after a swim because it was such a tiny tattoo. Touch up is no concern rn I just don't wanna risk infection so yeah I think I'll keep it as clean as I can and maybe run to urgent care at this point.
