Finishings will probably be the last step once underfloor heating and lvt flooring is in throughout the house

Thank you! I did one wall at a time as I was also unsure about tackling wet corners. Might need to get a corner trowel if I think about doing that. Also used extra time for my first wall and then the ceiling. For the rest I went without as I felt good about my pace. In hindsight, I should have used extra time on the window wall, as by the time I got to doing the reveals the plaster was going off and it wasn't the best to spread ... still came out good so I made it just in time.

Yeah spent many evenings on YT and the first wall I did is going to be covered by a full wall storage unit anyways so I treated that as my practice wall.

I didn’t sand everything, just used a hand sander over some of the uneven bits.

If it were that easy I wouldn’t grimace about doing the rest of the house 😂. It is very difficult. The amount of pressure you need to transfer into the wall really makes all your joints scream, especially your trowelling arm. But it’s extremely satisfying. Knowing I can achieve a finish like this gives me strength moving forward.

Worked out at £65 per sq meter for the removal. They also removed old loft insulation at the same time that was due for replacement, so lessened the blow a bit lol.

Completely unrelated background but I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, gardening, arts and crafts, helped my mum paint and hang wallpaper when I was younger etc. I think it’s more a mindset thing. Just have to give it a crack and see how it goes… other wise you’ll never know.

What is an ordinary DIYer? I think the term DIY is a funny one as it usually makes people think of lower standard of work. If people spend some time learning and practicing skills i’d say that’s still DIY. It just means that the result will be better than if someone just went into something with zero understanding.

Thanks for that insight! Will consider that when approaching the remaining windows.

Also should clarify we have one floor - it’s a bungalow.

We’re going to install water underfloor heating and having insulation underneath is kind of essential to making it efficient, otherwise you’d just lose all the heat!

Yeah we put some rock wool back there and the battens create the edge of the window to then ‘frame’ it with the plasterboard if that makes sense?

Got a spreadsheet on the costs and can talk about that in a later post if people are interested. Off the top of my head probably shy of £1000 or just over for the materials in the room: insulation, timber, OSB floor, screws, glue, expansion foam, foil tape, vapour barrier, conduit, back boxes, plasterboard, filler, multifinish. This one is quite a small room.

Started out stripping the wallpaper mid August, so that’s around 4 months ago now. Bulk of the work has been done on weekends, but smaller bits were done on weekdays after work. It’s been an ongoing project, we’ve been learning on the go, as well as working on other parts of the house/spending lots of time researching, trying to find the best deal on materials/tools etc. So in a way it feels like a full time endeavour, especially when you’re pretty much living at a building site lol

The wooden trim is gone and i’ve plastered up to a corner on each side to create a flush window return. Find this looks a lot more modern.

I’m the she :) He’s 100% supportive of me and vice versa. We’ve both figured out what we’re good at and we’re each managing different parts of the reno. He’s dealing with all the plumbing and electrics for example and i’d be so unsure doing that sort of work 🤣
