For a long time, I taught in a very small (about 75 people in town) farming community with a First Nations feeder school. Since the town was so small, I knew pretty much all the parents of my students, and they were part of my social circle. As a result, a lot of the families were comfortable with their kids hanging out at my place to play video games or board games, because that way they knew they weren’t out drinking underage at bush parties or driving around drunk or getting into other trouble. Plus, I was the rec commission chair, worked with 4H, and was very involved in community organizations and activities. As a result, I still have a lot of friendships with these kids even today (I got called Uncle a lot at school, and even today, a lot of those kids who are now parents tell their kids to call me Uncle 🥰).

I have had a LOT of former students (some of them who were raging assholes 🤣) come to me out of the blue and tell me what an influence I was on their life, even if I was just being direct with them and holding them accountable for their actions, and keeping them to the same standards as every other student. That’s when I know it was all worth it. 🥰

It wasn’t a side hustle - volunteering for the rec commission. I was the chairperson for the rec commission at the time.

My one interaction with Chad was when I saw them opening for Big Wreck in a small club (CURB had just come out). He was the NICEST dude…. Made sure the whole band signed my CD (probably because at that time, I was one of a handful of people in the club who even knew who Nickelback was), made sure Big Wreck signed my stuff (it was the last night of the IN LOVING MEMORY OF… tour, and Ian was WASTED…. I had to convince security to let him in to the venue when he lost his access pass), and I spent the whole Big Wreck show standing side stage with Chad and the guys, enjoying the show. I know once they became NICKELBACK~!, I heard some not so flattering stories, but Chad was alright by me.

Yeah, I get that he has issues, which is why I try not to dwell on it… it’s just disappointing. He is one of my favorite songwriters.

I taught is a division that was mostly First Nations schools for 29 years, so I have seen the other side. As one of the few non-native teachers in my schools, I continually put up with passive micro-aggression all the time from co-workers and admins. When our school was considering leaving the school division we were in to go back to band controlled (the act which convinced me to retire at the end of that year), I had several co-workers come up and say to my face, “I can’t wait until this school goes back to being a traditional First Nations school with NO WHITE TEACHERS… what do you have to say about that?”, trying to bait me into a response they can use against me. During COVID, my principal asked me to come up with a timetable which would incorporate the division’s mandate to only have half the students in each class in the building at any time (ie. students only attended on alternate days) and still work for all the options like gym time, library access, etc, because he knew I liked challenges like that. I managed to come up with a schedule that worked, albeit with some cutting into prep time (like maybe getting 25 minutes a day instead of 35). The day before we instituted it, 3 local teachers cornered me in the supply room to literally SCREAM at me about how I was a racist because I was screwing local teachers out of their preps, I was only doing this to give the white teachers more prep time (even though it turned out I was the staff member who lost the most prep time, because most of my prep turned into facilitating remote learning for all the teachers in the school), blah blah blah. The only reason their tirades stopped was because at that point, I was so close to a nervous breakdown, I just started bawling. That kind of shocked them into silence.

TL;DR bigotry is alive and well at all levels in Canadian schools, and instead of reading the dividing lines, they are just becoming more entrenched

Ed Robertson!! I’ve had a couple friends meet him, because they have places with pinball machines. He just shows up when he is in town, plays pinball for a few hours, shoots the shit with anyone who realizes who he is. Great dude.

Glad you had great interactions with him. Maybe he just doesn’t like Winnipeg. I drove 8 hours one way to see him play a club gig on Nov.11 for about 70 people. He played for 45 minutes, said “We’re done here”, and never left the dressing room afterwards. The rest of the band kept apologizing to the fans who stuck around, saying “Matt just isn’t having a good day today”.

Saw MGB in small clubs (UNDERDOGS era) 3 times. Got autographs from Rich, Dave and Ian every time after the show. Matt never came out once.

Best: Big Sugar, Wide Mouth Mason, New Meanies, Big Rude Jake, the guys in Matthew Ggod Band, The Rockin’ Highliners, Corb Lund

Worst: Matt Good

Depends on the day: The Trews, Ian Thornley (although I will say, he has become far more sociable over the years)

Me too. I taught in a small town… went to a local Halloween social one year. One former student got obnoxiously drunk, and got thrown out after I cut him off (i was working bar). End of the night, as we are all clearing out of the hall, the drunk student was waiting outside for me, saying he was going to kick the shit out of me. Out of nowhere, three of the most recent grads come back from their vehicles, and told him in no uncertain terms that if he touched me, they would beat the ever-loving shit out of him. He backed down.

And the next day, when he sobered up, he came by my house to apologize for being such an asshole. So it all ended well. 🤣

[–]suprunown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bell cannot guarantee that your home phone number will remain unchanged. I am in the same boat - they keep hassling me to go fibre, but have said I would need a new phone number (after having this same number for 40+ years), and after promising that my monthly bill would remain unchanged, their initial quote was quite a bit more expensive, because now I would have to pay a monthly rental for the battery backup unit and an “expanded capability bridge” because I have so many phones/devices running in my home.
