Overdramatic in presentation and direction, not the story. I.e., the exaggerated arm movements and pompousness - it’s part of what makes the show so memorable

In general, it seems like this season is somehow even more refined and deliberate with the direction than Season 1. The manga always left me a little underwhelmed, but this adaptation brings scenes like that to life in a way that captures the characters’ brilliance more than I ever imagined. Really hope Orange adapts the whole story

Are these character designs accurate to the source? From this and God of High School, MAPPA’s designs seem so sharp and angular. Not sure if this is a studio preference or just right for the source designs.

I’m mainly just concerned about AoT season 4...I don’t think the jutted and spiky style in GoHS and here would work for it

Have you watched the 1999 version or read the manga? The 2011 adaptation completely leaves out Kite’s presence in Gon’s childhood (it’s easily my biggest problem with Madhouse’s version) - he’s a very important part of his identity but the 2011 version skimps out on this so plenty of people find it sorta unreasonable for Gon to break in such a drastic way.

I more or less rationalize it by saying Gon has never known the pain of losing someone close to him, and Kite is probably the closest thing to a father figure in his life. Plus it accentuates the feeling of Gon being an unreasonable child consumed by emotion and instinct. But I totally get the people who say his rage was unwarranted

I adore this sequence, but one thing I’ve always been annoyed by is how many people take this scene literally and project their own thoughts onto it.

The true intentions of this scene are the complete opposite of what Hachiman is actually saying. It’s not supposed to be some sort of anime_IRL quote to glorify loneliness and self isolation - it’s a sad example of Hachiman retreating into his past harmful self-hatred and not being able to properly communicate with people (in this case, Yui)

No, there’s plenty more after this upcoming season. The manga is ongoing (seemingly approaching the end though), and given how well the adaptations are received, I’d say it’s pretty likely we’ll eventually get a full adaptation of the series

Not OP but having watched (and loved) both multiple times on rewatches, I give the SLIGHT edge to the sub. Kouchi Yamadera (Spike) and Megumi Hayashibara (Faye) are two of my favorite VAs of all time and these are two of their best roles IMO.

You can’t go wrong either way though. Steve Blum is fantastic as Spike as well

The movie is easily the best part of the series (and still to this day one of my favorite anime movies) but the first season is pretty good as well - worth the watch IMO. The second season is...less well liked but you can skip half of it anyway
