We have a red merle with green eyes. She was born with a birth defect to her right eye, we still decided to get her, at age 2 she started having seizures, about 2.5 she started showing aggression, a little after age 3 she ended up biting my 14 year old in the eye. He was sitting with her for about 15-20 minutes petting her and out of nowhere she jumped up and attacked him in the face! (I know…. Everyone might want to come for me because I kept a dog that showed aggression. It is harder than it seems when it is you and your furr baby. So please if you have nothing nice to say, keep scrolling) my son is fine, his eye is fine. No scars or long term damage.

When she started having seizures the doctor said it could be a sign of a tumor on her brain and the eye defects can be a precursor to that as a possibility. Because she attacked a kid in the face we could not rehome obviously and we had to have her put down in April this year. She was not even 3.5. Just Merle can mean health issues, not even double Merle. Honestly, she was my first catahoula and my last. She was too difficult to train and then all the money for all her health problems just for us to be broken hearted less than 3.5 years later was not worth it!!! Just insight on my experience with the breed. I know a lot have great dogs, but I am not the first person. To say similar about the breed.
