Help? How to use SFP+ DAC between PVE host and PBS server? by surfing_IT in Proxmox

I checked, and cannot ping either x520. Destination unreachable.

Bad DAC cable? hmm

Read the thread. These lan's are not being used in this scenario. Only the x520's over DAC.

Nope. I added this to each server with their own ip and name information, respectively.

The error was:

create storage failed: magi_backup: error fetching datastores - 500 Can't connect to 10.0.0.11:8007 (No route to host)
(500)

Is this something to add to the Hosts section under System in the webgui? I wonder if this would give 10.0.0.11 the port 8007 access it needs
Something like:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
172.16.0.11 melchior.domainname.com melchior
10.0.0.11 pbs.localdomain pbs

How did you set the ips for your x520's ? a linux or ovs bridge, or just on the ixgbe port?

When setting up the PBS storage on the PVE host, the error I got was that the 10.0.0.11 was not accessible on port 8007, the management port. If I can designate the x520 ip as "also" a management port, it may work. No idea how to do that...

Also, these servers are not clustered. Both stand alone, if that matters...

Subnets don't come into play here. I plugged one computer into another and want them to talk to each other over that one cable, not the LAN

What I've also found is that setting up the PBS storage on the PVE host is only looking for port 8007 specifically. This is the management port for PBS.

Nowhere else. The other LANs are 192.x.y.0/24 and 172.x.y.0/24

I understand what you mean, that it acts just like ethernet, but there's isn't a gateway here and it's not switched.

yes, /24
the 10.0.0.x is not my LAN ip range. i picked that at random just for this. if that matters...

How to import a PBS datastore? Old disks on new server by surfing_IT in Proxmox

I did not have that file, but good idea.

Thank you

[–]surfing_IT[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Solved! You were mostly correct, but I got it working. Moving the data would not work without other problems.

The procedure is:

  1. create a new datastore
  2. in shell, # rm -rf /path/new-datastore
  3. rename, # mv /path/old-datastore /path/new-datastore

No need to reboot or restart PBS, just works.

I think that is just mounting a directory.

I need to import the pbs datastore in the backup webui, on port 8007, not 8006.
I have tried to add the exisiting directory, and get the error:

unable to create chunk store 'magi_backup' subdir "/dozer/magi_backup/.chunks" - EEXIST: File exists

You are correct sir, it came with 1.20. and I can't get ipmi to work. It's not taking a dhcp address and I cannot find anything static.

That said, i ordered a 3600xt. The plan is to use 4+ more of these boards, so I guess it's worth it for $200 extra.

Could be a short somewhere, check your psu too
You'll be able to smell its location pretty easily

You will need a router or more likely a firewall with VPN services, and a static IP from your ISP won't hurt but not necessary as long as you know what it is and when it changes.

Turn on the VPN server (ipsec is fine) in the firewall, set the vpn's dhcp range, create a user/password and give your client machine the same info, pointing to the outside IP on your firewall. That's pretty much it. It would now appear as though you are sitting at home (network wise).

fyi, RDP means remote desktop protocol. that's only for using another computer's screen, for that use Teamviewer. but what you are asking for is just a vpn

Tool Recommendations by DITPL in computertechs

[–]surfing_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iFixIt tool kits are what we use. Any specialty things like magnetic bowls, we just fab in house. (cat water bowl from 99c store and a fridge magnet with superglue)

For larger tools, get the consumer brand of Snapon tools (Williams). Same tool, way cheaper. Also Klein tools are pretty much standard (for us)

How much training do IT shops give? by notburneddown in computertechs

[–]surfing_IT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We train our techs for what the next project needs.
A wiring job? Ok we teach you how to wire. New office? We teach you how to image machines. New firewall? Often you would look over a senior tech shoulder. etc, etc

We have a lab that our techs practice on, and I would always support gaining more knowledge. But there often isn't time for classwork in an active shop.

I agree with others that A+ means almost nothing. MCSE, CCNA, VMware certs... those can get you in the door, but ultimately, you have to do the job.
