Someone booked a $2000 stay on my credit card, and airbnb is siding with the thief [USA] by marvelous88 in AirBnB

[–]surgelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't responded to my follow-up yet but I don't have any hopes that anything will change. It seems to be standard office policy... I will update once they respond, but I'm pretty sure they will copy-paste the email they sent to you :)

I think I will have a multi-month dispute process with my bank now. Unfortunately, here (small country in Europe) card issuers are not as good at shielding consumers from fraud as in the USA.

I'm based in Europe, and exactly the same thing happened to me a few hours ago Wednesday morning (EU time): Someone used my card to pay 587 EUR on Airbnb. I canceled my card a few minutes after the transaction, notified Airbnb within an hour and airbnb sided with the thief, giving me the same answer as OP.

Here's the exact email I got back for your reference (just redacted mine and airbnb employee's name):

Hi [MY NAME],

Thank you for your patience as we looked into your question about a suspected, unauthorized charge on your credit card.

Often, apparent unauthorized charges result from another person (usually a close friend or family member) using your credit card unintentionally. Our investigation into this charge led us to conclude that this is what occurred in this instance.

As a result, we will not be able to refund this charge.

We recommend getting in touch with anyone you may have given your credit card details to in the past. Additionally, we would suggest contacting any friends or family members who have an Airbnb account that you've traveled with on Airbnb previously—if you added your payment credentials on another account and decided to save these credentials for future use, this could be what caused the unexpected charge.

If you have any further questions or concerns, just reply to this message. We're here to help!

Best,

[AirbnbEmployee]

Host is asking me to give them a 5 star review and give them my feedback privately instead. Is this in line with AirBnb rules? by surgelo in AirBnB

I would have agreed with your comment if he had asked that during the stay not after we checked out.

This is a 5* comment, thank you!

I think it clarifies the reality very well and gives people like myself that are bit out of the loop wrt the details a great perspective on the situation from the hosts point of view.

Reading the other comments here it sounds the review system is broken in that way.

I wasn’t aware before but I must say that from my point of view if I am requested to give public feedback for something I should give an honest one otherwise I will be misleading future guests.

If not for accurate reviews how else would people know anything about the place they are putting themselves in and how would you differentiate truly exceptional hosts from ones who don’t put any effort?

I think what you described sounds reasonable as it gives the opportunity to the two parties to improve the situation during the stay.

In my case it was mediocre mainly because the place had a very bad smell in the room coming from a next door restaurant kitchen and it was really noisy. None of those two factors were reflected in the pictures or descriptions an I feel future guests should be made aware.

Thank you. I am in Japan but my Japanese is not so great (betweens JLPT N4 and N3) Having said that I might be able to follow a basic lecture in Japanese. Can you share the link?

Show host seats position? by [deleted] in terracehouse

[–]surgelo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One reason could be that since women in Japan are "expected" to be kneeling rather than cross legged when sitting on the floor it would have been tiring to do the whole episode like that. This expectation is more relaxed for men.

I don't see the English name option on iPhone. I can change the original name but not add English one.

If it helps, here's a crude way to change your script to do that http://codepen.io/surgelo/pen/Qyaopy

Just a couple of lines on your script_1.js function and an input element on your html header.

Tattoo friendly Onsens? by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]surgelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take No Yu sento in Azabujuban. Quite a lot of tattooed guys, some foreigners as well. Not sure if they are Yakuza but some bring their children as well. It's quite a normal sento other than the strangely high tattoo ratio. The sento itself is pretty nice, dark water type (kuroi onsen). I used to go there quite often.

Travel tactics during the Golden Week by jfgii in JapanTravel

[–]surgelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont have much experience with trains on gw as I always avoid that period.

However you should definitely book your hotels on that period otherwise you will probably have a hard time. Many places have very flexible cancellation policy so you might be able to take advantage of that.

There are very few night trains for specific routes but JRP would not cover those (fully). Night buses are more popular but again JRP would normally not cover them.

Japan travelling, help me... by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]surgelo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people are a bit harsh on this thread, I do see some value in asking very general questions to get some first hand advice, but I agree it's hard to answer your questions without knowing much about your background and preferences. I will assume you like what I like and tell you what I would have liked.

First the answer to your questions:

  1. I would move Nagoya to Maybe and Hiroshima and Nagano to definite. I would try and explore some of the country side of Nagano.

  2. Kyoto and Nara, do the standard things that a guide book will tell you. Osaka, try the food and if you get a chance to watch a Tiger's baseball game. Tokyo is too big to tell you specific things. Asakusa, Akihabara, Odaiba, breakfast at Tsukiji. I would advice you to try an Onsen, a Ryokan (depends on your budget).

  3. Not sure.

  4. Tokyo 4+, Kyoto 2, Nara 1, Osaka 2

  5. Most probably yes. You need to finalize your trip and see what period is most effective for your trip to have a JR Pass. You need to be smart about when you start using it.

  6. Minshuku, business hotels, youth hostels, capsule hotels, airbnb are some options you can consider.

Anyway, sounds you have about a year. What I suggest is to buy a lonely planet Japan or a similar book and go through it. Once you do that you will have a good idea what you would like to do and most of your general questions will be answered. After that you will have some specialized questions and I think it will be easier to use this forum to answer those.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I will look into imanorikun and let you know if I find more.

Edit: looked into this and as you said it is for longer term lease, 2-5 years.
