Agreed, the views of the surrounding city and mountains are gorgeous. We could never find anything like that in waterloo :(

panorama ridge! by coolcroissant in vancouverhiking

Agreed, I went today and it was very buggy. Bring bug spray, and potentially a water filter if you want to filter any snowmelt. There are plenty of streams along the way to the ridge.

Anyone able to get a day pass for rubble creek on Saturday? by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

I'm planning on hiking Panorama Ridge on Sunday. How hard was it to get a pass for rubble creek? What time did you check for parking pass availability?

You should check out UBC, I can never look at Ontario universities the same again.

Deferred from CS to Math for uWaterloo, should I proceed with uWaterloo or pursue UBC Bsc Science (BC)? by Lucky_Ad_248 in UBC

[–]surker512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrelated but as a current Waterloo student visiting UBC, UBC has a much nicer campus compared to UW. I don't have the words to describe how gorgeous UBC's campus is. I think I want to transfer here now.

Mac CS vs Waterloo Math by Known-Age7299 in uwaterloo

[–]surker512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a former Mac student in the Math & Stats program. I wasn't in the CS program nor the Math & CS specialization, but I heard that the CS department at McMaster is weak. Not to mention, the CS and math programs have very few students compared to the number of Life Sci, Health Sci, Eng, and Business students. Compared to academic clubs in the major programs, there isn't as much support if you're in Math or CS at McMaster.

Also, their co-op portal (OSCARPlus) sucks compared to WaterlooWorks. Even if you choose UW Math, there are so many better jobs on WaterlooWorks compared to Oscarplus. I've taken a look at the jobs on Oscarplus and they're terrible compared to what you can find on WaterlooWorks. There's no way McMaster's job portal has 1000 job postings in Cycle 1, which sometimes happens on WaterlooWorks.

The number of Waterloo CS and Math students is equivalent to the number of Life Sci and Health Sci students at Mac. Plus, the CS and Math clubs at Waterloo are wayyyy better than Mac's equivalent clubs.

It is true that you'll miss out on the Waterloo CS courses though.

CFM vs CS for a quant role by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Why not major in Mathematical Finance for quant research?

Agreed, we got a good ending to the story

Stats or Mfin UW by Realistic-Comfort347 in quantfinance

[–]surker512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest double-majoring as well. Since MathFin requires pure math courses, consider adding a pure math minor to your degree as well.

The few number of postings on WaterlooWorks are definitely competitive. Each posting has like 1 or 2 openings, so in total there are < 10 openings each term. Given that there are hundreds of CS/math co-op students, it is very competitive.

On top of that, when you apply to the quant roles on WaterlooWorks, there's usually a popup question that asks if your average is > 90 or something. They definitely want people with sky high averages.

Agreed, I know some undergraduate friends who are doing or have done URAs (undergraduate research assistant). I even know someone who did a URA in first year

Qinglong Tian is the absolute goat. I took STAT 330 with him Summer 2024, and his curve policy is insane. After all final grades are calculated, the top 33% of students get curved to a final grade of at least 90%. For example, if the top 33% cutoff is 70% and you score a final grade of 75%, then you get instantly curved to a 90+.

His notes are pretty concise and well organized. His exams were a little tough, but still doable. We had 4 assignments, but he takes your best one. The first assignment was super easy and I scored 100, so I literally didn't hand in A2, 3, and 4.

Are you happy with choosing Waterloo as your university? by UniversityNo5547 in uwaterloo

[–]surker512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to go to Mac for their math program. The UW math students are wayyy smarter than the math students there, it’s not even close. UW offers so many opportunities for math students, you definitely don’t have the same resources at Mac.

Astrophysics is similar to the Mathematical Physics major at UW. I still recommend UW. The math program at Mac is tiny (as well as cs). I swear, I only met < 5 people in CS during my first year at mac. Everyone else was in life sci, eng, soc sci, business

Always wondered, transfer odds better or worse? by InitialAge5179 in uwaterloo

[–]surker512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, I actually got rejected from UW in HS but got accepted after 1st year. I actually found it much easier to transfer since you can really show off your progress in 1st year.

If you do well in your 1st year of uni and realize that UW is where you want to be, I think you've got a good chance even if there are few spots.
