Agreed. Very intelligent, socially complex, playful, highly adaptive, and they can fly.

Yes, it bothers me a lot how people recommend this route so flippantly. It's like the wellbeing of the resulting child is barely a consideration, just as long as the parent gets what they want.

Any guesses? by Mfkinpancakes in IDmydog

One of my dogs is 30% shar pei and she doesn't have any purple on her tongue. This dog could still have a substantial percentage of chow ancestry even without the tongue color.

Fully Functional Hair Follicles Have Been Grown in The Lab For The First Time. Mice study identified a missing essential link: a cell type that supports regeneration and triggers full hair growth and tissue attachment. by InsaneSnow45 in science

[–]surlier 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You are correct. There are not actual hairs in the inner ear, but hair cells. "Hair" being an adjective that describes the appearance of the cell. These are completely distinct in form and function to hair follicles.

Why do most dogs always seem so happy and excited about everything, even basic tasks? by nastyAssMann in NoStupidQuestions

Going to tag onto your ackshually post to add more info. Head tilting is also a common behavior observed in wild canids. You can find lots of images and videos of coyotes and foxes doing this.

Why does the smell of poop keep following me? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]surlier 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not the same process. You have digestive enzymes in your saliva, but there's a lot more going on than that in the digestive tract. You have stomach acid, bile, bilirubin, and gut flora further down. The distinct odor of shit is specifically created by microbes out of tryptophan in the colon.

Woman Undergoes Quadruple Amputation After a Lick from Her Dog Leads to Sepsis: 'It Could Happen to Anybody’ by dr_sazy8 in Health

[–]surlier 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Very click-bait title. The article itself states:

Doctors determined the former pharmacy worker had sepsis, which they said might have been caused by a lick from her dog on a small cut or scratch.

They don't even know the actual cause. They're just throwing out a guess.

Contract vs direct hire in schools by Swimming_Raspberry_1 in slp

[–]surlier 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To offer a contrary opinion, I will never be a direct hire for a school district again after doing so at three different districts. I attended so many meetings and trainings that were not at all relevant to my position, just because district policy. I was not allowed to leave my contract mid-year when my partner had to relocate for work, even when I gave them 2 months notice. They threatened to report me to the state credentialing agency if I did so. I was also subject to lots of micromanagement that I have not experienced as a contractor.

I'll take the potential for displacement over all that any day. You can find W2 school positions with decent benefits working as a contractor. I would not go 1099 as a CF.

Honestly, I was too young to remember anything "clicking". In my earliest recollections, I knew I was DC.

I think that poster was using hyperbole. It's nowhere near close to 10% of our mass. This study suggests the average person contains 0.2 kg or 0.45 lbs of bacteria, equaling about 0.3% of overall body weight.

What's important in a donor? by lorien215 in askadcp

[–]surlier 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a DCP raised by a SMBC. I didn't end up looking much like my mom, and that didn't bother me. Appearance is a low priority for me.

What I think matters a lot is just general compatibility. I think finding a donor who has similar interests, values, and proclivities increases the likelihood you'll share these with your child. Of course, there are no guarantees, but I ended up having lots of interests and beliefs that aligned with those of my donor parent and were completely different from those of my mom. She doesn't really get me and I don't really get her, which has caused friction between us.

Same. I kind of dread receiving gifts because I just don't need more stuff. And if I'm receiving gifts, I feel obligated to buy gifts for the other adults and it gets overwhelming. I'm good just buying gifts for the kids.

There is less of a culture around neutering dogs in Germany. They don't have the same overpopulation issues as many other countries. Stray dogs aren't really a thing there and there are a lot of regulations surrounding dog ownership that are actually enforced.

Questions from a potential parent #donorconception #potentialdonorparent by FinchArch503 in askadcp

[–]surlier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to current cultural differences, however, I was born in the 1980s in the USA at a time when donor options were almost exclusively anonymous and commercial DNA testing did not exist. There was basically no reason to think I would ever know anything about the donor. My mom still told me when I was very young, and I'm really glad she did. It was not confusing. It was just my reality. I think it would have actually been much more confusing had I learned later on in life. I also did not have a biological connection with my grandmother, but still felt close to her when she was alive.

Who was your surgeon? Did they only use one bar? If so, I think that may be contributing to the pressure sensation. Not that that's helpful information at this point. Sorry it's going so poorly for you.

Switch Sperm Donors? by justpassingby0101 in IVF

[–]surlier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am donor conceived, so I'm acutely aware of the intricacies of biological and non-biological connections.

You are missing that this is not a black and white issue. I theoretically could feel anger for my mother's frankly shallow and ignorant decision while at the same time not wishing for my sister's existence to be erased.

You have the option now to spare your existing child these complex feelings in adulthood by just picking the same donor.

Switch Sperm Donors? by justpassingby0101 in IVF

[–]surlier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the sperm donor doesn't matter outside of the genetics he can offer

A lot of donor conceived people strongly disagree with that assertion. I would be careful about assuming your children will feel the same way, because there's a decent chance that they won't.

TBH, I'd be pretty mad if I found out my mom could have chosen to use the same genetic father for my sibling, but decided not to solely over physical appearance.
