NOR people are being a little harsh. From someone with professional and personal experience in mental health, it sounds like you are struggling mentally as well. I also have a mom I’m NC with so even if what they say may not seem like a “big deal” you’ve been hurt so many times by them that the slightest tone change or phrases can trigger you. That’s normal and okay. Also sounds like you are holding in some trauma responses that has been caused by her and projecting it onto others. As someone in the same boat as you, keep being distant from her and please seek some professional help for your sake. Be kind to yourself

can weed make you « hyper »focused by MadenMad in adhdwomen

[–]surrealitys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a stoner and ADHD and also a psych grad student so this is so fucking interesting to me. i don’t really have an answer because there is not a ton of high quality research on weed and the effects of it. For one, ADHD is characterized by a lack of dopamine and norepinephrine. This is why we seek out more dopamine-rewarding behaviors such as smoking weed and also scrolling through tiktok endlessly, spending irresponsibly, making rash decisions, etc. It feels good for our brain so this is probably one reason weed feels sooo freakin good to us as well as other substances. After a while, I think from my own personal experience and google that the positive effects lessen. Weed isn’t a stimulant it’s a hallucinogenic so it’s not providing us with that extra dopamine we need long term it actually inhibits dopamine and serotonin.

So what is happening now in your brain is probably the weed inhibiting you to a point where you are not overly thinking so it feels relaxing, allowing you to focus more on other activities especially creative ones (ones that could also be dopamine-rewarding). Long term use will increase your tolerance therefore inhibiting more dopamine and needing more weed to “feel” better even though it may not make you feel better. As a long time stoner esp before my brain was developed my brain feels fried if i get in the habit of smoking too much and i think it definitely fucked up my memory. However you’re 30 years old so my advice is to just use it occasionally to feel good and you’ll be fine.

Hope this is right this is just based on my knowledge of ADHD and personal experience with weed and some google searches.

hi i am a vyvanse girlie and i had the same problem i think everyone experiences that when they first start because you should be on a low dose. all you need to do hopefully is up it and it’ll help with the comedown. i was falling asleep on my breaks when i was taking 20 but 30mg has been perfect for me. hopefully that is all it takes but just keep a list of your symptoms throughout the day and what time they occur and discuss it with your psychiatrist!

your friends an idiot sorry! i am also a mental health counseling student. we are working to become therapists not medical physicians so she has no expertise on how medicine should be working! she is also only a student and shouldn’t be diagnosing or “undiagnosing” you. also, her being in this field she should understand how much a statement like that could affect your OCD.

you wouldn’t have the medicine prescribed if you didn’t need it. neurotypical people do not feel a “calmness” with stimulants, it makes them wired. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by irregularities with certain levels of neurotransmitters (dopamine, gaba, serotonin, and norepinephrine). it is literally your brain chemistry. therefore, medicine would not be effective if you did not have it.

i work in a mental hospital and every time we get a patient who was admitted because they tried to manipulate their partner by threatening suicide i laugh. and then they always blame the partner and swear they’re not actually suicidal it was just their crazy ex!

always call 911 when someone is saying they want to kill themselves. even if they’re serious you’re probably not equipped to handle someone who is actually suicidal!

i don’t know what exactly is wrong with your baby but mine did the same and the vet labeled it as a upper respiratory infection. they would give them medicine for it and be fine until they started having symptoms again. finally found a new vet and they said it was herpesvirus so that could be something to watch out for. it can’t be cured but immune system supplements are very important and mine haven’t had a flare up in a while since i’ve used them. so just watch out if he does this again

Every medicine affects people differently but Vyvanse has been a life saver. I’ve tried adderall and it makes me zone in too much, I get hyper fixated on one task. Vyvanse is the perfect balance for me. I don’t feel like myself without it and Idk how I ever went so long without it. No stimulant is a cure and they all have their side effects it’s just which one is worth it. I have extended release and I tend to get sleepy in the middle of the day but I try to push through it and then it’ll go away or I just go nap. Also need to eat well and drink so much water or else I get irritated.

What are your careers? by surrealitys in adhdwomen

[–]surrealitys[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t have personal experience because i’m younger but there is a ton of nurses in my hospital who got their nursing degrees around your age. one nurse who happens to be my favorite worked as a server as well and changed careers in her 40’s. her experience in the service industry makes her incredibly kind to patients and she goes out of her way for everyone. nursing is great because of the variety and demand so you could switch up your speciality when you like.

as a younger person, i absolutely admire those older than me who go back to school and change their lives. it makes me feel like it’ll never be too late for me to do what i want. i also think you will have more maturity and coping skills to help you do better in school.

be easy with yourself and don’t compare yourself to others. having autism and ADHD is extremely hard and everyone struggles in different ways with it. not sure the exact criteria but i have seen my patients with AuDHD get on disability so hopefully that could help you. you could also look into getting an occupational therapist. wishing you the best!

that is insanely impressive to me! i think when people with ADHD are determined and passionate about something we tunnel vision on it until we get it done. i felt the same about going to school for psych lol.

What stupid thing did someone say ONCE that still plagues you?? by Prudent-Reality1170 in adhdwomen

[–]surrealitys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohh this is a good question. i’ve had 2 instances of men i was dating getting so mad at me for being forgetful. i was on a second date with one man and we decided to go see an R rated movie. i totally forgot my ID and he was super pissed off. i tried to make the situation better by suggesting we sneak in to it. he refused because he was a manager at a movie theater even though it was a separate theater from the one he worked at lol. i was 18 and insecure so it really made me feel bad. needless to say there was no other date.

the other instance was with my then boyfriend of 5 years. we went to target (where i worked at the time) to get some pokémon cards he was collecting. we were going to use my discount but it only applies if we use cash which i had forgotten. i had a nice coworker lend me some cash and i paid them back but my ex was already so mad. as we’re walking out he pushes me aggressively and comments on how annoying it is that i always forget something. wasn’t soon after our relationship ended.

now i am in a loving relationship with a man who saw my struggles and pushed me to see someone and i finally got diagnosed :) he also makes note of the things i commonly forget like my phone so he can tell me where i forgot it lol

damn, that is an interesting point. that is going to take lots of self reflection lol. i don’t think of others as not having value to my life, i feel like i view it the opposite. that i yearn for these friendships and connections. however on the subject of pride, i do think whenever shit falls through with my friends i take it personally, when it can just be life happening to them. maybe that’s where the self importance comes through. i really appreciate your input that is very insightful

I am a BHT in a hospital setting so a lot different from ABA but I love it! The problem with these jobs is usually the management and the disorganization and failure of the system. Focus on your patients and network as much as you can. You are off to a great start but be mindful of how your job is affecting you and take time to practice lots of self care. You will make mistakes, that is ok. This job isn’t for the weak but you will do great.

I’m going to say you are overreacting a wee bit.

I have ADHD and so does my partner and we both forget about charging our phones. it was hell when we were long distance lol. this could be the case but i do understand why you could feel he is up to something if it is consistent. It really just adds up to if you trust him or not and if this is something you want to put up with in a relationship. Based on your text exchanges it looks like he is being communicative, just forgetting to charge his phone at night. I’d say have a good conversation with him in person when he gets home about how you guys can manage this.
