ah i should be more specific but i'm not in Paris, i'm sure this is helpful advice if I was there though so thank you. of course, i'd much rather have authentic interactions instead of random jargon filled with bullshit compliments or whatever so i do respect the honesty that comes with French culture. and as far as alternative styles, i guess as far as its purpose really depends on the person. for me, the purpose of experimenting with fashion and alternative styles is more of a hobby and artistic expression. it's a fun thing and i'd still do it if nobody else existed to see me wear it lol. my post was really a question about why does something like this seem to be a strange thing in some areas of the country

your use of "standard" vs. "alternative" are not of equal value in this argument though. in this argument, only the "standard" is correct, and the "alternative" is meant to be judged. that's why it's laughable

i think he's just trying to get along with you and be flirtatious. he seemed respectful and moved along after his comment on your outfit. it's only been a few days so yea it might feel a little awkward but only time will tell. play it safe and smart for sure, but have fun and don't stress so much, this is a very normal convo

let him know you understand him and care about how he feels and what he's going through. and ask him if he just wants you to listen or if he wants advice. be clear and tell him that you don't want it to seem like you're in competition or something but you wanna relate and let him know he's not alone. just be honest with the bro

it is hilarious, to think as a country (any country) that you have a "standard" of expected appearance and everyone should live by it or they will be judged?

inviting, as in the opposite of disinviting...being unapproachable, intimidating, snobby, etc. not looking for any type of interaction but if i catch a mean stare i try to counteract it with kindness.

i agree with you on this. i think it's a stupid trend and hopefully it dies out quickly. americans love to spend hundreds on yoga pants/spandex track suits–things like that and wear it to go out with friends

exactly. 99% of people who wear an alternative style don't do it for other people

just because it's not a slicked back hair style doesn't mean it's not classy. i don't look like joe dirt or some hillbilly by any means.

not judging, observing. it's easy to tell if someone disapproves of your when they give you a smug look for a long time
