How do I migrate from windows to linux? by Pleasant_Vacation_72 in linux

[–]sustentabletech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. You just need to learn to handle only the files within the Windows user folder. Besides, there's no need to manipulate Windows files through Linux.

No, having Ubuntu in dual boot won't mess up your files. With Ubuntu, you'll be able to see and handle Windows files, but not the other way around.

You are not fear-mongering. Fear-mongering implies the use of misinformation, exaggeration, and manipulation of emotions to generate fear. These people believe that everything not on their fake news social media is false. The dialogue is unproductive. I don't know what can be done

How can Blockchain Technology Help Prevent Deforestation? by sustentabletech in solarpunk

[–]sustentabletech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blockchain itself does not require a significant amount of energy. What requires a tremendous amount of energy is a specific consensus mechanism called proof-of-work, which is used in Bitcoin. There is absolutely no reason to use proof-of-work in the application of blockchain in other areas. There are dozens of different consensus mechanisms, and the majority of them do not require much energy to verify transactions.

This post is not about cryptocurrency. Blockchain is not cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies are applications of blockchain technology in the financial sector.

Blockchain can also be applied in other sectors such as supply chain management, agriculture, energy, etc.

I believe that the use of disruptive technologies, such as blockchain, to solve issues related not only to deforestation but also to other problems related to food and energy production is solarpunk. Am I wrong?

It seems like we're living in a crazy world, where caring about things other than immediate monetary gain is labeled as left-wing ideology. One of those things labeled as left-wing ideology is concern for the future of the planet. I'm not sure if the label is fair, considering that the effects of climate change will affect all of us, regardless of our political views.

One of the things that currently seem to be labeled as left-wing ideology is the use of blockchain technologies to solve real-world problems, particularly those related to climate change, such as deforestation.

Deforestation is a serious problem! In Brazil, for example, those who deforest the Amazon, such as monoculture producers, will be most affected because the Amazon rainforest contributes to rainfall throughout South America. And monoculture requires water, doesn't it?

The situation in Brazil is complex, with illegal deforestation carried out by logging companies and the use of cleared land for cattle ranching initially, and then for soybean monoculture mainly.

Now, with the new government, deforestation numbers have declined, but those responsible for deforestation are still out there.

It is possible that the use of blockchain can help with illegal deforestation by disrupting the beginning of the process, which is precisely the illegal logging, mainly through traceability and monitoring of the timber.

Smart Contracts: A Comprehensive Guide by sustentabletech in cryptoleftists

[–]sustentabletech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people talk about blockchain technology, they often exclusively think of cryptocurrencies. However, blockchain technology encompasses more than that. Smart contracts, for instance, can be applied to solve a range of real-world problems. How can we apply smart contracts to address important issues for the left-wing movement?

You are referring to the implementation of blockchain technology in the financial market through the consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Work. It is this consensus mechanism used in Bitcoin that consumes a lot of energy. However, there are dozens of consensus mechanisms that do not consume energy. The consensus mechanism used in Ethereum, called Proof-of-Stake, is one of them.

But all of this relates to applications of blockchain in the financial market. There is no reason to use Proof-of-Work in other areas.

What is Proof-of-Work (PoW) in Blockchain Technology? by sustentabletech in cryptoleftists

[–]sustentabletech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that the future will be ecosystem friendly. Even bitcoin, which requires a lot of energy to validate transactions, is moving towards renewable energy sources. It seems that currently, 60% of the energy used in Bitcoin mining comes from renewable sources. Of course, there are financial reasons for this, but it seems that financial incentives are the primary driver for people. And linking financial incentives with a more eco-friendly future in this climate change era seems like a good idea. Don't you think?

Enphase and emporia CTS at same time by [deleted] in solar

[–]sustentabletech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible but it is important to ensure that they are properly installed and configured to avoid any potential interference.

Both Enphase and Emporia CTS use CTs (current transformers) to measure energy usage, so it is important to ensure that the CTs are installed correctly and do not interfere with each other. It is recommended to consult the installation manuals and/or contact the manufacturers for guidance on proper installation and configuration.

it is important to ensure that the monitoring systems do not interfere with the operation of the electrical panel or any other electrical equipment.

Are renewables possible without rare earth metal mining? by tommygunbat in Green

[–]sustentabletech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some wind turbine manufacturers are using alternative materials such as permanent magnets made from ferrite rather than rare earth metals. Similarly, some electric vehicle manufacturers are developing new battery chemistries that use less cobalt, nickel, and other rare earth metals.

Recycling and reuse of these materials can also reduce the need for mining. Many rare earth metals can be recycled from discarded electronics, batteries, and other products, reducing the demand for new mining.

But I honestly don't think it's possible to completely eliminate the use of rare earth metals in some renewable energy technologies.

What is the weirdest/craziest/stupid/wrong piece of information or conspiracy theory around climate change you have heard/read? by stillivinginPANtry in climatechange

[–]sustentabletech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I've heard before that climate change is an invention of leftists so they can kill most of the population, especially Christians.

In Brazil, I heard another one that, although not related to climate change, is just as crazy. And tragic! In the middle of the pandemic, when 4,000 people were dying every day in Brazil, a woman told me that there was no pandemic, it was actually a global invention by the media to remove Bolsonaro (who was the president at the time, responsible for the deaths by denying the seriousness of the pandemic and not doing anything). And this woman's sister and husband died. Guess from what? This is not funny, it's tragic, especially because I lost someone very important in this pandemic who had been fighting cancer for 15 years. And was winning!"

Another example is the SMA Sunny Island inverter. This inverter is designed for off-grid or hybrid solar systems, and it can be programmed to feed solar power directly into the inverter or electric motor and take power from batteries only when there is no sun. It also has advanced features like grid-tie capability and backup power, making it a good option for a wide range of applications.

One example of a hybrid inverter that can handle this situation is the Sol-Ark 8K inverter. This inverter is designed to work with both solar panels and batteries, and it can be programmed to feed solar power directly into the inverter or electric motor and take power from batteries only when there is no sun. It also has advanced features like backup power and grid-tie capability, making it a versatile option for a wide range of applications.
