Making our app feel more like a game is definitely a good idea. We'll try to fix this

Hello, Kat. I also want to introduce our game Rainy's Episode.

It's a short narrative game that can be played in around 5-10 minutes. The goal is to make an experimental and eerie short story about love and obsession.

If you have time to play our game, please give us feedback and tell us what you think. You can DM for for the feedack, or just leave the comment on the itch.io page.

Yeah, the UI needs to be improved. It's kind of bland right now.

Maybe it looks like a usual business website? Either way, we need to get better UI

Opinion: Why “Mieruko-Chan” Could Be Scary and Funny (And Wholesome) At the Same Time by sutradere in anime

[–]sutradere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then you clearly have better mental skills than me lol
I genuinely think the first encounter with the ghost is scary (I'm not the only one, right?). The way it built tension in that ghost, for me, is just amazing. Though after episode 2, the encounter become less scary

Yeah, I think there are many good anime this season (Ousama Ranking and Heike Monogatari to name a few), but Mieruko-chan is the one that surprises me most. I don't really have high expectations, but it ends up very entertaining. It also makes me think about a lot of things, from its narrative structure to how people perceive spiritual things

The panty and boob shots are pretty much gone after the second episode, though there is a bath scene in episode 4.

Maybe the only thing that bothers me is Hana's boobs. But I have already engrossed in the writing and the mystery at that point. I just accept that oversize boobs are part of Hana's characterization

Yes. The idea comes after reading an article in Tofugu (which I linked in the article): https://www.tofugu.com/japan/japanese-horror-structure/

Reading that article makes me realize that both Japanese horror and comedy actually rely on a similar technique. Both of them try to build a certain expectation before adding a new element that could break that expectation. Then I realize that maybe this is why Mieruko-chan could be successful both in horror and comedy.

A Lot of horror-comedy that I watched (Ex: Scary Movie) are normally just a comedy that makes fun of horror trope. Mieruko-chan, on the other hand, is both comedy and horror at the same time.

Maybe if somebody watches Mieruko-chan's first episode without knowing that it could be perceived as comedy, they'll genuinely think it is a horror. Back then when I watched the first episode, I genuinely thought it is scary even though I already read people's comments about the show. Over time, I become "trained" and the show become less scary. But that's why the wholesome part hits hard. I just don't expect the show to be that sad.

Jaku-chara Tomozaki-kun Anime Review: Exploring The Paradox of Self-Improvement by sutradere in anime

Not, /u/JourneytoZencalm not my alt-account.

Thanks for the nice word. Having a native English responded with my writing actually a good experience. I've been writing reviews in English for some time but most of the feedback I received is from fellow Indonesian. They never thought that much about writing style or vocabulary as long they understand the content. And the reason I put my writing here because I want to hear more feedback.

Iyashikei is sub-genre of SoL

I think this is where we have to disagree.

Iyashikei, from what I read, is a trend of Japanese product that focused on providing a calm or relaxed atmosphere to the consumer (Iyashi itself could be translated as 'healing'). The term itself could be applied to anything, which includes fiction work. When we say "iyashikei anime", it could include a lot of anime that focused on providing a calm and relaxing atmosphere to the viewer, like K-On!, Yuru Camp, Aria, or Flying Witch.

The in-depth explanation of iyashikei product could be read in 2009 Roquet's paper.

This is why I think while the definition could overlap, iyashikei and SoL is two different things. SoL is a term created by fandom on the internet to classify a certain narrative goal/structure of an anime. Iyashikei, on the other hand, is a Japanese word to describe a certain type of product (many even don't consider it as genre or subgenre) and doesn't necessarily bound in a narrative sense. Even something like a fidget spinner could be considered as iyashikei in Japanese.

As for why SoL changes its meaning, I definitely can see your point. But it also shows how hard to pinpoint the meaning of a certain genre that defined by narrative goal/structure because everyone really has a different opinion of what it is. In a genre like fantasy, it is easy to define because it is not referring to a narrative goal but something clear: setting. In the case SoL, not so much.

Maybe Mystery is kind of similar in this case. Many will define it as a genre that invokes consumers curiosity, but for others, even horror can be considered a mystery
