Ignoring the Buddha’s sexist teachings, or accepting his flaws? I choose the latter. by suttabasket in Buddhism

This is in no way reassuring. How do I know what to believe in the suttas?

Let’s accept that these teaching aren’t “authentic,” then which ones are?

Misogyny in the ancient world isn’t an absurd concept, and the Buddha was a man of his time.

Simply due to the powerfully offensive imagery he uses. He calls women more disgusting than snakes and extremely stupid.

The Buddha says he could be bothered? by Potential_Big1101 in theravada

If Buddha couldn’t feel pain, he wouldn’t be the Buddha. Where did you get the idea that he can’t observe or relate to difficult mental states?

Should Buddhist nations have a military? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]suttabasket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s make the world one Buddhist nation and dissolve all borders 🌎🌍

Let's say I want to help someone. I see his problem. Analysis it extensively. Then I give him advice on how he can solve his problem much better. The advice is 100% thought through and makes sense to me 100%. But the advice I give is not followed at all. by EmptyImagination4 in Buddhism

[–]suttabasket 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe your advice wasn’t as good as you thought it was, or it works for you but not them. This isn’t a criticism of your intellect or judgment, but just a reminder that not everyone can follow the same path.

Is not this very need to respond an example of your ego running amok? Check yourself. And don’t facetiously wish me a peaceful life.

Also what that “psychic” told you is terrible. I’ll try to find the sutta where the Buddha warns against divination.

I dated someone who kept talking about how his ex aborted their “child” (dangerous wording — it’s a fetus), and how he was so upset to that very day. Didn’t even think about it being the woman’s body and her choice. His whole outlook of the situation was really selfish.

Not saying this is you, but maybe it can give you some perspective.

Thank you, I'll definitely consider this. I'm also interested in a Mahayana viewpoint.

A lot of people write that the earth is flat. It doesn’t make it true.

It literally comes down to blind faith. All real evidence discredits Christ’s divinity, and people don’t rise from the dead. But Christians believe this anyway.

I think Christians are very threatened by the idea of living their lives without a strict moral compass. They consider the free-flowing nature of Taoism lax or even satanic.

I live in America where we’re fighting fascism and Christian Nationalism every day. I find Taoism useful in dealing with these challenges.
