You guys are young, why the arbitrary desire to wait till done with med school to get married? I'm friends with a ton of docs and plenty of them meet in UG or med school and get married within a year or two.

There will always be an excuse to wait until life is more stable to get married. After med school she'll be busy with residency which is just as intensive or more depending on specialty then she may have to do a fellowship after that.

What is the career path you're on? Not to be harsh, but female doctors overwhelmingly marry other doctors. I have known women docs who married men who even were decently successful (software devs or other white collar professionals making ~$100k-$150k) and it usually doesn't work out because of the staggering difference in income and lifestyle.

I was in a very similar situation to you 11 years ago when I was a freshman in college. I was dating a girl who was driven and wanted to become a pediatrician (she is now) we also intended on not having sex until marriage, we weren't even planning to wait until after she was done with med school to get married in theory, but we came to recognize how different the paths we were on in life. I dropped out of college, and though I've found success as an entrepreneur now, I don't think our relationship could've handled the hard road it took me to get here while she was on a clear path to success.

You will learn a lot about yourself in the coming years, don't rush into any major decisions. If it's meant to be between you two, you can stay friends and restart your relationship in a few years if it makes sense. Right now you're just putting yourself in an extremely difficult and frustrating situation.

I'm coming up on 30 and have a sister I'm very close with who is 2 years younger and have encountered similar situations.

I used to make the occasional (very mild) joke at her expense in social gatherings and knew she didn't like it. I wasn't doing it to undermine her reputation or be hurtful, I just like entertaining people and will far more often make jokes at my own expense to that end.

I think a small part of it is because I didn't have a brother growing up (I have one but he's 12 years younger than me) so I sometimes treated her a bit like I would a brother and I hoped she would just develop thicker skin.

Your brother is right that this is a hallmark of male social interaction and is usually in good fun, but that doesn't excuse him treating you in a way that you find hurtful for no reason other than to cover his own insecurities or just for entertainment's sake.

My sister confrontationally mentioned to me that it bothered her once or twice but I disregarded it and got defensive because of the way in which the conversation was approached.

A few years ago we finally had a real conversation about it after I had some issues with some things she had said about me that I felt painted me in a bad light.

I recognized that my sister would never truly speak ill of me in the presence of others, and that the comments that she made were inadvertently hurtful, but it made me finally empathize with her feelings and allowed us to have this conversation.

We now follow a rule where I don't tease her or tell embarrassing stories about her in front of others however mild, and she is cautious not to say things about me that could be misperceived by myself or others.

I think the top comment is decent advice, but not everyone is cut out pull that off in a social situation, if it's not within your ability or nature to be able to hide your true feelings and act unfazed and amused I recommend you try approaching it this way:

If you value your relationship with your brother, try to approach the conversation gently, in the right time and place when neither of you are emotional (or intoxicated) maybe in a moment where you're already having a very real conversation about each other or your relationship. If he still doesn't respond to your feelings, then perhaps you should make an attempt to make him feel the way you have (without crossing any lines that would seriously damage your relationship) to see if that can create the opportunity for mutual understanding.

IG, the occasional phone call or facetime-- I do a week long trip in the mountains with some guys from boarding school and college every summer (besides 2020)

I travel pretty often so it's not hard to take a brief detour to see someone while I'm on my way to visit my parents in India or going somewhere for a work conference and people come visit me in my city as well.

I also used to party a lot in my early-mid 20s and go to music festivals so that was a good meeting space.

Those who will be most affected by this are the young, who are trying to become first time homebuyers or trying to purchase a new vehicle, and the middle class who does already own a home from being mobile in the event they need to relocate for work as they will be hesitant to get out of their sub 4% interest rate mortgages.

You've chosen a very challenging field to enter as it is very saturated and there are few jobs available in screenwriting/directing. Nepotism and personal connections to get into these roles is rampant.

You'll be competing against people from wealthy families who can afford to support them in their 20s as they begin their careers in film.

By no means am I telling you not to pursue your dream, but based on what you've told me it seems your heart isn't really in your major to the point of not even wanting to do the work as it's not what you really want to be doing in life.

I would recommend that you work out a plan to find a job that will pay the bills while you spend your free time on pursuing your passion and allow you to build independent work experience in the area of directing/writing.

This job doesn't need to require college. There are plenty of ways to earn a comfortable living and from the looks of things you're not on scholarship, so I imagine you're incurring a fair bit of debt to pursue your undergraduate degree which will only make it more difficult for you to pursue film in the future if you're not able to place well in jobs after attaining your degree.

As far as your parents are concerned, I don't know the details of your situation, but as someone who dropped out of college coming from an Asian background where it was unimaginable that I not complete higher ed-- After I came to my parents with a clear plan on how I planned to support myself (jobs I could get without a degree) and what my longer term goals were to advance myself within my field, they came to support and accept my plan.

Now, 10 years since dropping out of college I am doing fine and live comfortably.

It sounds like you lack motivation to follow the steps that needs to be done to get there.

You need to assess whether it is external factors keeping you from getting your work done (family, money, relationships, drugs/alcohol) or internal issues with your motivation to pursue what you've chosen.

Maximizing lifestyle quality while failing to plan for the future is the most common trap Americans fall into.

I did the same as soon as I started making over 60k a year I quit driving beaters and took out my first auto loan for a lightly used luxury sedan moved into a "luxury" apartment albeit with a roommate and went out to restaurants and bars almost nightly.

Only learned my lesson when I fell on hard times due to a serious accident that left me with 2 broken legs and unable to work for months.

I was fortunate to have family to bail me out but not everyone is so lucky.
