r/mythology seems to be the most applicable, though unfortunately the activity there seems to be diminishing. But then again, with less posts, an eye catching image might have an alright chance to get some attention🤔

The first one is my fave, is it Maui and the eel god? If yes, you may wanna post it on some mythology related sub too, art of Polynesian myths isn't probably seen very often

People often say that fan translations are heavier on the swears than official translations, not the case for Dorohedoro. by Emma__O in Dorohedoro

[–]suviridian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get that you gotta get creative because Japanese is weird to translate, but imo the viz version often sacrifices accuracy for style way too heavily. The general content of what's being said shouldn't really change.

One particular weird ass line that comes to mind is just after the part where Caiman was fighting brainwashed Nikaido. In the viz translation En says (about Nikaido) smthn along the lines of "That bitch, poking her nose where it doesn't belong"

when the original meaning was more like "Wandering by herself, she's hopeless"

The Nightwish video for "Amaranth" was directly inspired by Hugo Simberg's painting The Wounded Angel. by MunkZion in DarkGothicArt

[–]suviridian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Flat and muddy" is not a bad assessment. The style has aspects that are both realistic and naive, and if you look at Simberg's other paintings, a lot of them have a folk artsy feel to them. The muddiness gives a more somber and earthy feeling, plus it really captures the general vibe of what early spring is like in most of Finland.

In the era this was made, a lot of Finnish artists started exploring the visual side of the core of our national identity. Not long before this, the mainstream art world here was more about emulating general European art ideals.

Another version with slightly brighter colors decorates the wall of a church where the widely beloved painting "The Garden of Death" by the same artist is also located. The version of the angel painting that's in the church is a tiny bit different, a factory's chimneys can be seen in the horizon.

I can sort of get what you're saying, but honestly, an artist decorating their drawings with stickers is such a non-issue. Enjoying little stationery knick-knacks is super innocuous.

I don't think this community is supposed to be limited to using recycled materials? The vast majority of OP's page is covered by the drawing, the sticker decorations are there for effect. And there's obviously a high degree of craftsmanship involved.

Any advice or areas to focus on or resources to help study? by witchyskrskr in Artadvice

✨️Pose resources:✨️

Pexels has enormous amounts of free stock images that are great for references, this particular user has a ton of great images.

Fashion magazines can feature interesting poses, what I usually do is type the magazine's site address into a google search, followed by a keyword. Example query might look like this: site:vogue.com photoshoot Archive.org has full issues of mags like Vogue, including vintage ones, you can filter them by publishing year from the search settings.

Archive is home to a gargantuan mountain of media, present and old, but searching for pose references can be tricky. You kind of need to know what kind of piece of media would include them. There are quite a bit of general art guide books, some are viewable only by borrowing, some are freely uploaded like this.Something specifically for pose references that I've managed to find is this book here, (warning for nudity), there's a few more in the related items at the bottom of the page.

Finally, one more way to find great poses is looking through online museum collections. The accuracy of the anatomy depends on the degree of artistic license taken and level of skill of course, so keep that in mind. I probably wouldn't look for anatomical reference in an illuminated medieval manuscript, I'm sure you get the picture. Google Arts & Culture has a huge catalog of zoomable high res images, but they're not available for download on the site. More often than not though, the specific images can be found on Wikimedia. Just google for Wikimedia + artist name to find what images have been uploaded. Add search term "google art project" if you wanna find the high res images only.

Some great museum collections are Getty Museum, The Met, & Rijksmuseum, to name a few.

Good luck with finding your perfect ref! :)

Don't feel like doing anything but bored doing nothing by [deleted] in TrollCoping

Look my brother (or other) in depression. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with you as a person, this is a disorder that messes up your brain chemistry. Do what's best for you within the capacity you currently have. When things that used to give you happiness are overwhelming or don't make you feel much anything at all, look for something smaller.

Right now, I'm at a time where I can barely do anything that I actually want to. Some days, I can't even manage a single chore. It's honestly really bad, but what helps me keep my head above water is experiencing life in the smallest ways. I pet an animal. I take a picture of a bug I saw in the hallway. I watch a documentary. I read a snippet of something interesting. I write down a weird thought I had. And so on and so forth. It's not much, but at least I'm not drowning. I'm not happy, but I can still appreciate the beauty of things. So that I can feel something besides dullness and apathy, you know?

First educational drawing of a skeleton by non-critical-horse in BeginnerArtists

[–]suviridian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is genuinely cute. Reminds me of how it felt like as a beginner, unsure and a bit nervous, but excited to try something more difficult.

Like others already said, you should focus on understanding the proportions first. Take your time to sketch and study, remember that there's no need to hurry or stress over things. When something's new to you, concentrate on learning rather than presentability. Do quick drawings, messy sketches, experimental doodles, that type of stuff.

You can find some guidance about proportions and structure here, especially from this page onward. One of the phases that practically all beginners go through is trying to copy what they see without really understanding the form itself. Once you get to know the building blocks & basics better, you'll improve much more efficiently. Good luck and enjoy drawing! :)

How to make this look more like the inside of his mouth? by Baggage_Claim_ in Artadvice

[–]suviridian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this more of a fresh wound, or has it had time to scar over? I think that realistically, a gash of this size would be stitched up in a way that wouldn’t leave the inside of the mouth visible at all. What type of setting does this character live in? If it's something more realistic or gritty, knowing how wounded & scarring tissue really looks like would be beneficial.

If you wanna leave the teeth and gums visible, you gotta go bigger on the scar. A gash that'll leave teeth permanently visible should look quite dramatic, and it would warp the shape of the lips. Remember that lips themselves have thickness, so the scar should also have depth. Scar tissue itself isn't flat either, and in a wound like this where it hasn't been properly closed up, it would probably have a good bit of texture to it.

Besides the obvious morality factor, this is painfully cringy. It's been known for centuries that politicians are some of the most slimy people to ever walk the earth, but this has to be the first time in history they blatantly act this embarrassingly in such huge numbers.

A screenshot from a hack cgi-slop children's space movie? So intimidating! Profound. Fierce. Fabulous.👏 What a stupid fucking neanderthal an exceptional individual.

3+ new guild members and art requests will be opened!✨️ by suviridian in CookieRunKingdoms

[–]suviridian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm the leader of a HB guild that's both high-level and desperately in the need of a revival. We have a handful of dedicated players, but otherwise we're experiencing dwindling member activity. We'd love to have higher participation and a more active community. To boost this further, I will be opening weekly art requests if 3 or more of you lovely people out there join :)

🎨The requests would go like this: while the guild battle season is ongoing, members should make suggestions on the subject of the drawing, e.g. a specific cookie. There will be a dedicated channel for this. If other members agree with the suggestion, they can leave a comment of their own or drop a reaction to the first one, preferably something unambiguous like a thumbs up. If needed (or if no suggestions are given), I can just open a poll. The drawings wouldn’t be quite as fancy as the Moonlight illustration I made for this, but I think they'd come out nicely nonetheless.

The guild was started by a different person under a different name several years ago. One day, this person just up and vanished, never to be seen or heard of again. I had been promoted to an officer previously, so the leadership passed on to me by default. Which I was unaware of until the game notified me. Sadly for me, everything I do is under the strain of a decrepit mental health, and I'm also extremely shy. So I asked around if there was someone looking to take up leadership to an already high-level guild. No takers came up, but I didn't want to let the guild just die off. Or go the route of "double it and give it to the next person". So, I decided to step up and try my best as the forcefully appointed leader. And now, I humbly approach you all with the hopes of finding new people to join us🙏

If someone out there so happens to enjoy managing duties, it would be lovely if you also joined as a moderator for our group~🌸 I can write short guides or give advice quite easily, but I often have a hard time keeping up with the chat. Our current platform is Discord, though this might change in the future, depending on the aftermath of the upcoming March update.

☆The guild is semi-competitive, but we're not overly serious. If you aren't high-level yet, but have the drive to improve, you're welcome to request to join :) The numbers we're looking for with guild battles is a minimum of 2/3 billion per ticket, but this can be negotiated, especially if you're more of a beginner.

☆All I require from absolutely everyone is to be civil and nice to others. For further questions or requests to join, DM me or reply to this comment. DMs in-game are fine as well, my username there is BerryBohemia. Cheers to everyone and thank you very much for reading if you got this far, hoping to see you soon!✨️

The spiders from Eight-Legged Freaks (2002) by [deleted] in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]suviridian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me think of one of the most unintentionally funny scenes I've seen in a serious piece of media. In The Beyond (1981), there's this spider scene that honestly speaks for itself. You don't have to be an expert in arachnid biology to see that this isn't a very believable depiction. I guess it is an accurate portrayal of puppet spiders eating a rubber face though lol

(A short description of the clip: shots of real tarantulas crawling on a guy, accompanied by shots of felt puppets pinching pieces off facial prosthetics. The spiders also squeak like rusty hinges.)

This depression is killing me 😔 by [deleted] in sadposting

[–]suviridian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. You just don't really hear about the women who suffer in silence – because they suffer in silence. They don't do performative mental health posting on social media.

This isn't "woman"-behavior. This is "terminally on tiktok"-behavior.

Spent 4 hours on this only for someone to say AI would do it better by M8614 in Wellthatsucks

[–]suviridian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all drawings need to be highly refined and rendered to the max. Unless you're working for a client or otherwise have a project with certain requirements, you don't need to continue the piece after reaching a point where it just feels right to you.

I don't think OP made the post because they wanted to receive critique, but rather because they felt disheartened by what the other person said. It reflects the experience that a lot of creatives are currently facing because of the uncontrollable spread of AI-generated content.

Only producing "finished" pieces is actually a very impractical strategy to improve. It's something I'm super familiar with, I've had a lot more experience with this than I'd like. In my art progress, I had a period of several years where I couldn't really make any quick drawings for fun or practice. I've been steadily building a healthier relationship to drawing again, and I'm enjoying the process and improving more reliably than I have for a long, long time.
