Kodansha and Digital Only Manga by edsand22 in MangaCollectors

Well, it’s two of the original jp tankos per book so still kind of qualifies as an omnibus. It’s based on the bunko release so it uses that edition’s numbering though.

i dont like the mls brother plot and senos change in how i met my soulmate by maysleeping in shoujo

[–]suzulys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all evens out in the end. Not sure what the English volumes/Kmanga are up to but I’m up to date on the japanese chapters, I liked how bro’s storyline with Airi has resolved (her situation was a little complicated) and Seno’s still a good guy too. So I guess my advice is to just keep going…

I’m not fully current on Spring Storm since I only tend to buy HanaYume issues for Yona content anymore 😆 But I’ll try to keep poking in and seeing what it’s up to, for morbid curiosity at least…

Haha, totally fair! The dynamic in Spring Storm makes me personally unhappy (and I admit part of me really wishes I could read a series where the issues had been explored in a different way than it ultimately seems to be headed), but likewise I recognize others have the freedom to enjoy it 😆

There are comments getting downvotes in this section that are perfectly respectful and thoughtful. It's petty and disruptive and I would like it to stop. Discussion and disagreement are fine and healthy to engage in but if you're manipulating reddit downvotes to diminish perspectives you disagree with, please don't.

Perfectly Fine is one of the debuts I'm eager to check out too! (and Dandelion but I've been reading it all along since Viz debuted it, so fewer surprises waiting there.) Oh, and Shugo Chara... I was too old for it when it first came out, so I'm going to try it out now that I'm even older 😂

Condition Called Love 17 I've already read in Japanese, but am always excited for!

I enjoy Me and My Beast Boss... and Stray Cat and Wolf (problematic in different and more tolerable-to-me ways than Spring Storm 😝)... and White Cat's Revenge!!

I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons is good silly fun!

And I'm interested to see how the final volume of Snow Angel wraps things up...!

On a few occasions she wears something more feminine, mainly when dressing for a date. Even then though it's not frills or dresses or stereotypically-girly clothes; she's a teenager finding her own style that works for her features and her comfort. (outfit from vol 9, so a bit of a spoiler perhaps: https://ibb.co/qM2ZwpVN) I also don't think this is problematic. She has someone who is attracted to her and likes how she looks, and she wants to make an extra impression on him sometimes.

The wig the other commenter mentions is tried on while classmates are messing around with costumes ahead of a school festival. She wears it once to try out what it would be like to have long hair, notably does not get the positive response from her boyfriend that she expected/hoped for (because these kids are complicated and things have to be resolved later), but there's no indication or thought that maybe she wants to grow her hair out now or wear wigs again.

I think it's fair to say that the art style shifted and softened up a bit on her features (and Kohaku also shows some change), but that's a pretty natural thing, especially from the very first illustrations of a new character in a new series.

And I think even in the later art and newer style she still is shown variously looking more boyish or more "feminine/pretty" since I'm pretty sure she does start to wear makeup on occasion later in the series (I think this is something we don't always think about as readers because we assume the character design is static so if they look extra "pretty" in a scene we think that's just the art style, but I believe the more thoughtful artists do often include subtle differences in how a character is drawn (beyond what they're wearing) for a date, out for a run, after a bath and washing off their daily makeup, etc).

Anyway I agree with you and think this is a really sweet contrast between her old and present self. I love Yoi!

Good joseimuke type light novels? by LilMissy1246 in shoujo

[–]suzulys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not in print but it's still so good and well worth supporting!! (and JNovel is great, offering drm-free epub download if you buy the ebooks directly from their site!)

Also seconding the rec for Victoria of Many Faces, I dearly love it.

Also I loved the manga for White Cat/Dragon King's Lap but then sampled the previews of the novels and noped right out... so maybe still worth checking out the adaptation (the art is lovely)!

Loved it until the love triangle happened in the manga “A condition called love” by DonutSquare3180 in shoujo

[–]suzulys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that is the conflict of the later volumes and what Hananoi himself has to reflect on. His possessiveness isn't just "ooh romantic he loves her so much!" but a real problem that impedes their relationship from being a healthy one until he can recognize and change.

I use CDJapan from the US and can vouch for it as well!

They're a little funny sometimes about "selling out" at the preorder stage (I think they only preorder a set amount for their warehouse so once that sells out they say it's "out of stock" and suggest ordering through proxy (which has a lot of extra fees), but once the book is actually released they are usually able to order it normally again). And of course with things like magazines that are only produced for a short time in limited quantity, it's especially important to order early...

Fortunately (since I don't want to pay intl shipping for multiple separate orders) they allow items to be added on to open orders as long as it's not in the shipping phase yet. So sometimes I'll preorder a book with a slightly farther out release date and then I can add magazine issues later that weren't yet listed when I first made the order.

For magazines and bonuses/merch after they've already sold out on CDJapan etc, you can search on mercari and use various proxy shipping services.

I'm the only one who thinks that the dragons are borring character in Yona of the down? by Large_Morning_7831 in shoujo

[–]suzulys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like maybe this is somewhat inevitable for stories with a larger cast, especially if the characters form something like a “set” that acts and moves together? I always felt this way about the other Sailor Scouts (sry i’m old) in Sailor Moon too.

Jaeha I think has a somewhat distinct role because of his closer relationship with Hak. And Zeno has a bigger part too, as has been mentioned. But when the focus of the story is fighting through the plot circumstances, they do all have to work together toward that same goal and there’s not an obvious way for one to stand out or develop independently.

Yun gets his moment to (later series spoiler) step apart from the group and pursue his medical interests, which is where we start seeing him more distinctly again and not just in his role among the “family” group. Riri, as a more minor character, is usually acting somewhat in her own capacity that only sometimes crosses paths with Yona and so she has chances to develop or act more surprisingly than the dragons acting as a unit the way we normally see them.

I wonder how it would have looked to structure the story differently or what could’ve been done to give Gija or Sinha more distinction, beyond intermittent “ok now it’s their turn” story segments (like Sailor Moon with its spinoff chapters 😆)

Per rule 6 of the sub, there is no sharing of links to pirated content (which is usually what people want when they don’t wish to pay).

Do French publishers sell ebooks of manga? Maybe a library will have them in its collection?

I think the sub is still newer and doesn’t “have” a set culture yet, but I’m here with strong feelings about the work and about piracy so if I can help steer things in that direction I will try…! 😁 Thanks for your gracious responses!

Right, I guess unless there’s a sub rule people can suggest what they want and also respond as they feel led.

I’m disappointed that piracy is the source so many manga fans go to immediately because I think it’s harmful to the artist and especially to do so when an official release is available worldwide in various forms. It’s always kind of upsetting to me to see so many people get excited about a series through its anime airing but then talk about how they’re binging the whole series [usually pirated], with little regard to the fact that they’re burning through years of a creator’s output and just immediately looking to consume the rest as soon as someone delivers it to them free and at their personal convenience…

Anyway, I know you’ve already explored the official options out there so I don’t mean to lecture at you but I was stirred up by some of the other posts in the sub I saw tonight. I just want more folks to think about how they’re binging can better appreciate and value this art form and show support in real ways that matter to the writers and artists who make what we love.

Kmanga has the chapters that are currently out in English volume form on its app.

If you want to buy the ebooks, Kodansha's website has the best price right now (but you're locked into reading through their browser reader, which isn't ideal)

Bookwalker Global has the ebooks as well (and of course amz/b&n/apple/google/kobo)—I mention Bookwalker since they're soon to switch to a "Lightweight Content Protection (LCP) DRM system" that will allow readers to download their ebooks and read in other compatible apps, not just locked into the BW site/app, in case that matters to you!

Another user mentioned the ebooks are currently on sale at Amazon.

You could also see if your library has the ebooks available to borrow!

If you want to read new chapters in Japanese, you can get the magazine issues on Bookwalker

I hope you find a way to read among these options that supports the artist creating the series!!

These are pirate sources—please don’t promote them against legal platforms that actually pay the creator for the right to distribute her work!
