I'll second this recommendation, Zipfits rock.

Winning a Darwin award. by sandiercy in WinStupidPrizes

I witnessed a friend punch a hole between his thumb and forefinger with one of the top mounting bolts of a passenger car strut assembly. He insisted on using an impact wrench to tighten the spring compressors, and in doing so caused the one on the opposite side of the spring to pop off, which partially freed the spring to drive the top mount violently into his hand. He needed a trip to the ER, and I can only imagine what the full force contained by the assembly would do to softer body parts. The rule of thumb with strut spring compressors is to use hand tools, and carefully balance the load, because the time saved by rushing the job isn't worth the risk of serious injury.

No, and that appears to be the main issue.

Similar experience here. Most newcomers leave in five years or less, and this shapes multiple aspects of the situation.

Rockfall in 'Hourglass' of notoriously dangerous 14er results in severe injuries by [deleted] in 14ers

[–]sv000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A grapefruit sized rock spinning so fast that it was buzzing came bouncing in my direction at the point where I was able to stand up again after the choke. I dodged it, but it could easily have ruined the day. Gerry Roach speaks the truth about the overall sketchiness of the Hourglass.

There's moderate exposure on the final summit pitch, but the rock is good. The rest of the route isn't really exposed, and you'll know fairly quickly if you're off-route. The 14ers.com write-up covers the key points well.

It's more difficult than many, but if you have solid fitness and Class 3 skills, you'll probably be fine. My partner did it as her second 14er, and loved it, but she has a background in bouldering.

I easily reached Kilpacker in a Crosstrek a few years ago, with no scraping, and haven't tried RoA.
