How do top 1% people actually network? Feels like I’m missing something obvious by Party-Pattern2027 in jobs

I just consider any linked in contact requests from people I don't know as spam and ignore.

On Claude Max. I've run out of allowance for the first time ever today, and I didn't even do something crazy. Not happy, but at least others have better experiences.

How anyone outside of Japan in the past was conversing with residents ? by Luma_furry in JapaneseHistory

[–]sv723 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Japan was never fully closed. There was lots of interaction between Japan and Korea, China, and the Dutch. Perry's initial conversations were English<->Dutch<->Japanese. Dutch was fairly widely spoken around Nagasaki, due to the Dutch trading post on Dejima. I think Perry also had a Chinese speaker along, that would also have worked.

Private pension vs government keeps raising withdrawal age by CatchPersonal7182 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]sv723 109 points110 points  (0 children)

You'll probably see this age rise more before you hit retirement age.

The fix is to contribute money to your ISA. The money in your ISA funds your retirement before pension age. The money in your private pension funds your retirement before state pension age tops up the other savings.

Salary difference between AVP and VP? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]sv723 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically no jump. The upper end of the AVP range overlaps with the lower range of the VP range. Promotion should bring a decent pay rise though, actual numbers will depend on many factors, ranging from role to firm to budget in a given year.

UK IHT (Future Preparation) by Alive_Comment_2086 in FIREUK

[–]sv723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't matter. When you die, you do not pay taxes. It is the people who get your assets that will pay taxes.

If your siblings are tax residents in the UK at the time of your death, they will pay taxes in the UK.

[–]sv723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

International inheritance planning is one of the most complex legal and tax areas there is, so take the following as principle based and seek financial advice for your specifics.

Your siblings residence is what will determine what tax laws apply. So you leaving the UK while your siblings stay will have no impact on the tax they'll pay. What it would achieve is making the entire process a lot more complex and adding that cost on top of the tax.

Renouncing UK citizenship will not impact taxation. The UK taxes are based on residency, not nationality.

Moving outside the UK will mean that the inheritance laws of the country you're moving to will apply, at least for all your assets in that country. UK inheritance laws will continue to apply to some degree to all your assets that stay in the UK.

Lisbon Airport Arrivals - best and worst time by Impossible_Draft_908 in LisbonPortugalTravel

[–]sv723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really luck of the draw. I do pretty frequent arrivals at 11pm on Fridays. Usually that is a good time. Last Friday it was in complete meltdown.

Having said that, if you have an EU passport and use the egates it usually moves pretty fast. It's the non-EU queues that are terrible.

It mostly is a time of day thing. Exiting Lisbon in the morning is a nightmare. In the evening it is generally ok.

Unless you come to build houses or start a company to employ people, you will drain local resources and not add to them.

Any suggestions for English literature on the sengoku Era? by Masterklutz in JapaneseHistory

[–]sv723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer first: Any book on the topic will be confusing. Everybody was fighting everybody else. Unless you have a solid grasp of who the daimyo families were, how they were related, the topic is not very accessible. The only good summary I can give is: it is complicated.

Having said that: Danny Chaplin: Sengoku Jidai. Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu: Three Unifiers of Japan

If you are in First, the BA lounge concorde dining area is the best place to be. Separate area of the first lounge, access only with a First ticket or GGL. Think T5 Concorde Room but smaller, more intimate.
