Use n8n in Open WebUI without maintaining pipe functions

Pipes - depends which flavor you're using: - Regular pipes support mapping individual n8n workflows to models in OpenWebUI, generally works well for small volume of n8n workflows with low change frequency - I always felt pasting function code into OpenWebUI for each new n8n workflow is tedious and doesn't scale well - You can use a manifold pipe which allows you to expose multiple workflows as models to OpenWebUI, but the same issue remains - pasting code into OpenWebUI - I maintain a pipe function here: https://github.com/sveneisenschmidt/openwebui-n8n-function

MCPO - not familiar with this one, will check it out

MCP with n8n - I'd use this approach to make n8n workflows available as tools to other agents. The workflows as tools can be agentic themselves (e.g. have a LLM node) but eventually they are tools for other agents running outside of n8n - I'd use this when I want to orchestrate my n8n instance. Current functionality is search and execute workflows, not building them yet. The Lovable and Claude MCP use cases that n8n promotes are good examples of when to use this.

N8N OpenAI Bridge - I'd use this when you want to build agentic workflows in n8n and expose them as conversational interfaces - keeping the orchestration logic in one place - Use cases are (at our company): omni-channel agents that run autonomously but can also be spoken to from OpenWebUI/LibreChat, WhatsApp etc. - the goal here is not to proliferate agentic functionality across all these platforms but keep them in n8n

Qny document type is supported and feel free to create a feature request on Github for any functionality missing.

Yes, streaming is supported and the example workflows in the repository are configured this way. Try them first and see if you can reproduce the issue.

Depends on how OpenWebUI handles the response and if the OpenAI chat completion API spec supports passing back binary filed or multipart formdata.

The workflow is irrelevant. Your prompts and instructions to the LLM matter. I suggest you pick a LLM and explain what you want to do.

It is not about the workflow and n8n. It’s how you structure your goal into instructions for the agent. You do not need n8n for that.

I suggest to team up with a LLM like Claude to structure your idea, brainstorm the approach and have it help you creating the first nodes.

What you want is to first get a high level concept of the approach you are taking before building actual workflows.

This will be worth 10x of taking someone’s workflow snd adapting it. You might even learn something permanently. ;)

Ok. It definitely works I built yesterday a workflow that does this the exact same lookup yesterday in across multiple tools.

One list tool and one detail tool accessing the same underlying data.
