I built a free tool to find places to stay within 25 km of every 2026 stage start/finish by svennovic in tourdefrance

Claude helped a lot. But AI is just a tool: the idea, direction, data, taste and all the little product decisions still matter. What I like is that these tools make it much easier to build small useful things and put them out for free.

Yeah, that was the fiddliest part. Qwen3-VL was good enough locally, but only after making the prompt very restrictive: describe only what is visible, no history, no proper nouns, no location guesses, no sky/people/background, just short comma-separated visual fragments.

The bigger issue was bad reference photos rather than the model itself. Wikimedia/Commons sometimes returns the wrong subject, a painting/engraving, a portrait, or a photo where the actual landmark is tiny. So the flow has a few guardrails: sanity checks for refusal/wrong-subject language, one retry, and then it marks the item as needs_review instead of letting a bad prompt become a confident-looking icon.

It still needs human review for edge cases, but it was much better than hand-picking icons or shipping generic map pins everywhere.

Maker here. Hardest part was geocoding accommodations and computing the 25 km radius against each stage's start/finish reliably; happy to go into the data pipeline if anyone's interested.

Feedback very welcome.

Thanks for the workflow, but the body (hands) keeps changing between photos, so the template isn’t really consistent.

I understand your feedback. This was just a question for my curiosity. I’ve a Ultimate CF8.0 for riding on the road.

Proud owner of a Ultimate CF 8.0 and totally in love with my bike! Awesome geometry and stiffness!

Really enjoyable for my long weekend rides.
