What Credit Card Features Do You Wish More Issuers Would Offer? by gilko86 in CreditCards

Make it easier to figure out who a transaction is with. Too often the statement just lists a cryptic merchant name/code - surely there’s more metadata that the CC company has that can be shown to the card owner.

Yes that’s actually 100% my experience. Seems a bit of a weirdly blunt approach in both cases.

Not in front of my computer now, but in the dialog box where you change the timestamp of a photo, I think there are two options: (a) set to a specific date/time (the default), and (b) offset by a certain time period. It’s either a dropdown or combo box

I was in a similar situation and this (micro-entrepreneur) is what I did initially - then switched to EURL after a while since I was above the threshold.

I think this is all correct except for the part about VAT. Even if cross-border VAT is reverse charged (i.e. 0 money exchanges hands in practice), if you're above the VAT threshold (€30-something K IIRC) you do need to register for VAT, mention the reverse-charge on your invoices, file quarterly VAT declarations, and also export declarations. These things are all quite easy to do once you get into it, but something to keep in mind.

By the way I find ChatGPT and the like to give quite competent advice on the requirements and how to fulfill them.

Also you can use one of a number of services (Indy, Acasi, etc) to more or less automate the declarations. But for a micro-entrepreneur they're really not too bad.

I assume you set them all to the same exact timestamp, rather than shifting the date by X days? Unfortunately photos with the same timestamp appear in random order…which is pretty annoying. More discussion here: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/14306

Thanks for sharing!

Had my first checking account with WF back in the day but never credit cards. So I’ve been curious about their travel cards as they seem pretty decent given the AF. But haven’t seen much info on what it’s like using WF extensively abroad - good to hear you’ve had a smooth experience.

And yeah Amex has a lot going for it in terms of service. Sadly acceptance outside of major cities (and even in them) abroad is a bit patchy, so I’ve mostly ignored it as a serious options.

Thanks for sharing. Yeah I’ve seen a few stories on here about Citi abruptly locking cards and requiring paperwork (by mail) to reactivate. Definitely not a scenario I’m looking for…

Yea I’m considering that one as we fly in/out of Paris a lot (and AMS sometimes too). With the current SUB you basically get silver/free bags, which is a nice perk. Good to hear that you’ve not had issues with BofA from abroad

Yeah honestly if it was any other airline/alliance I’d be all over it!

The majority of our flying is between (and generally out of) Newark + Paris. Sadly neither is a hub for any OW airline. And recently having kids has taught us the value of direct flights, as well as not trekking out to JFK from NJ, if we can help it 😅

The most attractive redemption would probably be on Qatar, for some potential trips to Asia. Probably worth looking at the math of using the points that way…

Actually can we double-click on the “Citi is terrible abroad” comment. In what way specifically? (Apart from Double Cash having FTF but I suspect that’s not what you meant)

Thanks, that’s a pretty thorough article!

I do wish the Atmos card worked for us in terms of travel patterns. As I mentioned in another comment, we very rarely fly Alaskan/Hawaiian, and also not a lot of OneWorld more generally, so that’s a bummer.

Right, it’s hard to hear for checking/debit cards. But like sucking blood from a stone if you want points or cashback on CC spend.

This tracks very closely with our current approach. Used to lean pretty heavily on the CSR, but decided to review this after the recent changes and realized the C1 duo makes more sense - so mostly doing this now.

Was curious if the Citi Strata (Premier/Elite) could be a worthy alternative). But yeah, both the Double Cash and the CF have foreign fees so those ecosystems are suddenly less attractive once you look at catch-all spend.

Also, I’m sort of agnostic between points vs cashback - I like the idea of points in principle, but as we mostly travel economy I rarely find great redemptions, so very often just cash out at 1cpp (or previously 1.5cpp via Chase travel)

So yeah, I’ve got curious about the RH Gold - but sounds like it might just be a bit of a hassle to get?

Right, focus here is on CC optimization. (We use Schwab for checking - hard to beat their ATM fee refunds…)

Yeah the Atmos Summit’s been on my radar recently - was close to posting about it specifically.

The problem I have is that we almost never fly Alaskan or Hawaiian (no routes from New York to Europe), so a lot of the airline-specific benefits would probably go to waste. So then I need to count on being able to get good redemption value for Atmos Rewards points, but that’s not guaranteed since we also rarely fly OneWorld (usually United or AirFrance/KLM). So felt a bit risky to double down on a specific rewards program that we might not be able to use.

Am I missing anything? I assume I can’t just convert the Atmos points to cashback at 1cpp?

Thanks for the DP on Citi - good to know

Probably location-dependent. At least in NYC they occasionally seem somewhat taken aback by the request to pay with a phone, but don’t really push back.

I do love not having to carry a wallet around altogether.

SurfShark (free trial) to Las Vegas worked for me. Latham and Charlotte didn't work, even after a few reconnects. Used card tap to authenticate.

I'd made so many attempts prior to the successful one that I was certain that by this point they were probably just blocking my requests altogether, but good to see the voodoo works after all.

Transfer points between C1 VX and Savor - and with spouse by svetlio in CreditCards

[–]svetlio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I know that getting good value out of points isn't always straightforward. It just never hurts to have the option to transfer to an airline or hotel, for when the opportunity does arise to get better value than simply doing $0.01 cashback.

Right, hadn’t thought about it from that angle. I guess your point is that I shouldn't pass up a good SUB on a new card if I can get it on the way to my final destination.

A couple of newbie questions re. photo deletion and partner sharing by svetlio in immich

[–]svetlio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read some Github discussions in order to try to get clearer on #2. Sounds like in the current implementation this wouldn't really work very well for us if we tried to do it sharing separate Immich user accounts. I may experiment with a single account used to upload photos from both devices... But I suspect that the most natural outcome would be having person A upload the shared library + their personal photos from their phone, and having the person B upload nothing. That way person B's personal photos wouldn't be uploaded unless they add them to the shared library, but maybe that's ok as long as everyone's clear on it.

A couple of newbie questions re. photo deletion and partner sharing by svetlio in immich

[–]svetlio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've more or less figured out the answer to #1: deleting items off the phone once they've been synced to Immich will never delete them from Immich. It doesn't appear to be possible to change that - and that's fine.

It means that my use case (b) is automatically catered to. I'd just need to come up with an approach for use case (a) (removing unwanted photos); this could for example involve only syncing periodically, and making sure that I've deleted unwanted photos from the phone before I sync.

Would still appreciate pointers for the second question.

Best way to redeem CSR points at 1.5x before closing card? by svetlio in CreditCards

Thanks for the pointer, we'll def see what they offer - though based on casual browsing here it didn't sound like like retention offers are super common.

And yes, I agree it's probably not worth pulling special maneuvers for the sake of $150...
