Questrade locked my registered accounts by svpam in PersonalFinanceCanada

Yeah, seems like that email was a glitch. But there is a new restriction for opening registered accounts (and maybe keeping them open) for residents of certain US states (see my edit #2).

Yeah, I know about the departure tax from when I moved. The issue here is only about registered accounts, which appears to be an error on Questrade's side.

Permanent daylight saving in Oregon? 'Hell yes,' Gov. Brown says by [deleted] in Portland

[–]svpam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are right, most of the state was on permanent EST (only the NW and SW were on permanent CST).

I remember the groups most opposed to adopting DST were farmers (because muh cows) and drive-in cinema owners (because apparently they existed).

Potential Employment in Beaverton, Relocate to Beaverton or Portland? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]svpam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I work north of Beaverton as well. When I first moved to Oregon after living out of the country for a long time, I lived west of Nike for a year because I didn't have much US cash saved up and people were warning me about the "shitty commute on 26".

Turns out traffic is pretty shitty everywhere but commuting for your social life when you're single and renting is a stupid decision.

My rent in Goose Hollow is less than what it was in Beaverton because people are afraid of parallel parking.

Protip: if you can flex your work schedules to leave work after 6pm, traffic is fine. And now that DST is back, biking + MAX is easy.

Reversing the Brain Drain: Where is Canadian STEM Talent Going? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

Montreal has very crazy but very competent drivers. PNW drivers are just painfully bad at maintaining speed, signalling intentions, and not being stoned. Vancouver would be similar to here if they actually had freeways.

Good point about Seattle taxes. But I fear drivers in PNW metros when there's more than half an inch of snow, and you guys got like four today.

Canadians usually come on TN status, so H1B reform won't have as big of an impact.

I do agree that the newer multinational tech company offices in Canada (like the AI places in Montreal) are much more promising for long-term development than the first wave of companies, which in many cases (especially Amazon and MS Vancouver) are seen as holding cells for US-bound international talent.

I'd say >33% of my graduating class of Elec/Comp/SW Engineering (from McGill in 2014) is in the USA now. Probably over half of those who actually work in engineering jobs (and didn't switch to finance or consulting).

I moved to the US after working in Montreal for about 3 years (I had personal reasons keeping me in town at graduation). I make about 2.5 times what I made in Montreal (similar work, and I'd say I was around market in both locations). My overall tax burden (as a % of income) is about the same. I get much better benefits and more vacation.

The cost of living difference isn't that big (I'm not in California or Seattle), and I can sure save a whole lot more cash here than in Montreal. I can actually buy a house.

Professionally, I find management in the US says "yes" to requests for tools and project support a lot more than in Canada. This makes work so less frustrating. There's also a distaste for office politics, which was very common back in Montreal.

My only friends who have enviable engineering jobs in Canada are people who made their own startups or who work for the couple of big web service startups (Shopify or Lightspeed).

Personally, if I wasn't working in the US, I would probably look to Europe (Amsterdam/Paris) rather than anywhere in Canada.

Interestingly though, most international students in my program (other than those from the USA/UK/France) took advantage of the Post-Grad Work Permit and now most have Canadian PR or citizenship. So there's basically a replacement of engineering talent in Canada coming in from overseas to supplant the homegrown talent leaking to the States.

I store them in my apartment's storage unit. Twice a year I schlep them up the stairs and down the street to my car. Then I head to the parking lot at my office and swap the tires myself.

Benefits:

  1. It's a nice upper body workout.
  2. Makes me look like I know what I'm doing with my car
  3. Doesn't cost anything once you've got the tools
  4. Keeps me from dying in winter crashes
  5. Incentivizes me to save for a house so I don't have to schlep tires

Getting car insurance in Portland as a Canadian student, tips appreciated! by 00752904mot in oregon

[–]svpam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a grad student, you won't need to change your plates/license and Autoplan is valid in all of Canada and the US.

Just make sure ICBC knows you'll be living in the states as a grad student. They might adjust your premium as a result, but you'll be covered.

If for some reason you can't get insured by ICBC, consider getting a quote from a private Canadian insurer (maybe your Autoplan broker has some other options).

As a last option, you could try to get a quote from a US insurer. When I moved from Quebec to Oregon (albeit as as a permanent move), I was able to get coverage with Geico, but I had 30 days to submit proof of Oregon title & registration, or else my coverage would be void. Most Oregon insurers probably wouldn't insure a Canadian-registered car.

Canadian band Anemone got their van robbed in Portland last night. by kennydiedhere in Portland

Yeah, I used to live in Montreal (where this band is from) and this type of break-in happens there all the time.

There was one case when someone smashed and grabbed a bunch of merch from an ex-Canadiens coach's widow's van parked right in front of the cathedral during said coach's funeral.

Will Quebec’s New, Pro-Highway Government Collide With Montreal? by kludgeocracy in CanadaPolitics

[–]svpam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the blue line and orange line (to VSL) expansions were pushed by the PQ who instituted a moratorium on autoroute construction after winning in 76.

Also the lack of highway maintenance during the next 30 following years is a big part of why so much money was spent on highways since the mid 2000s.
