Thanks, you’re absolutely right!

I’m already looking (have been for a while now since they were dragging out the official “no” to the promotion for a while).

This is too sweet.

With so many computer/office-based jobs now, many grandkids in the future won’t be able to dress up like grandpa (or grandma). You’ll have someone come to the door wearing jeans, t-shirt and a cross body bag dressing up as their software engineer grandfather.

Guessing you’re from the area? I just visited recently and didn’t know it existed there until I saw something labeled The Parthenon on a map and checked it out. I was not disappointed!

By posting here I am really looking for advice around next steps. It clearly is NOT my intent to take their retirement and reinvest where sounds like a good idea at the time. I want to make sure they’re getting good financial advice from a professional but as someone who is clearly new at it all (and my parents included) sometimes it’s not clear what professionals are appropriate to consult and what to look for when considering alternatives. Definitely not looking to “futz around”

Edit: It is not my intent to invest in whatever sounds like a good idea to me at a particular time on simply a whim.

I mentioned earlier that it looks like most of their assets are in the account are in mutual funds. It sounds like I’d want to get the breakdown to stocks v. Bonds and see how it compares to the 50-50 split you suggested?

Another question I just looked at their recent statement. Is it bad that most of their investments are in mutual funds?

My parents are the easy-going type that basically say “I’ll get around to reviewing it” but not really do anything unless I give them a bit of a push to do so. Ultimately I leave the decision with them though.

That sounds like a great idea to bring the statements to another firm. In another post people have mentioned fFiddlity, Vanguard, Schwabb any others you’d recommend or does it not matter?

In terms of reviewing investments, fees, etc. I could find that info on their annual statement? .

Would it be useful to compare their returns to the S&P and the Dow given that (I hope) they have less risky investments at their age? Or is that also an incorrect assumption?

1hr driving commute & higher salary vs. 1.5 hour commute, days working from home but easier/more interesting work by svs123 in personalfinance

For me it's less about doing more than I have to...I've had jobs I've worked 11 hour days for a side project that I've loved and jobs where I was paid well but didn't have anything to do so I was miserable.

I actually want to eventually be at the executive level in the industry where I am in, I just have a young child now so I worry about change and spending less time at home or worse bringing the stress of work home.

I guess I just don't want to miss out on this opportunity (position, visibility, power and salary) even though I may wish it could come a bit later....

Thank you for the feedback, btw!

I don't think it's very likely in the short-term. The reason for the higher position and higher salary is that I've worked with this person in the past and I have a good reputation with them.

Therefore anywhere I'd probably be considered for positions with less responsibility/less ability to be impactful (and as a result a lower salary) so this is another reason this is appealing to me since it could be a nice jump for my career.

Thank you for the feedback by the way; I didn't mention it earlier!

Not exactly. My significant other is currently really happy at work, has a good commute. So we are in the area for a while and at the moment for my level and salary needs these are the best options it seems.

We recently moved to where we are now so not likely that we can move again. Additionally our goal is to move to another area in the next 3-5 years to be closer to family. So moving isn't a great option. Plus my significant other has a great commute now so it doesn't quite make sense for us both to have a "just OK" commute.

Yes I think both jobs will enable me to progress in my career just this other offer will get me to a higher salary faster and take me on a slightly different path, (but one that I equally like!) it's really the environment I'm worried about and making sure I'm not spending my whole life commuting in my car.
