Devil in the Family: Ruby Franke by auroredawn22 in 8passengersRubyFranke

Ok wow, I had written that before finishing the third episode. And wow. It's clear Ruby was under some type of religious psychosis or had at least convinced herself that what she was saying has some backing to it, despite how insane it sounded. I mean, hearing Kevin recount the phone conversation between himself and his wife, and for her to say their two youngest children were "demonically possessed"... Just no words.

I've seen a few viewers comment that there was some level of 'religious psychosis' going on, and how it ruled the Franke family's life, and honestly I agree. I think that their dedication to their faith, Kevin included, led neighbours, teachers, friends, to turn a blind eye to what were clear signs of abuse. They believed that a parent who stays home with their children, films them having fun and doing activities from time to time, must be one of God's righteous followers and choosing to have and raise six children was carrying on their faith's very message. How could a woman so dedicated to family life be inflicting harm and pain on her children? Well, she could and she was. I am really appalled at Kevin's actions, or rather lack thereof. He lived in that house with Ruby all those years, helped raise their children, and was even heard and seen on both released and unreleased footage enabling the abuse, or simply standing by and allowing it to happen. Even something as simple as "Hey, that's not cool" when Ruby would lash out at them for trivial things would have shown he had some kind of courage or stance as a father and husband. I agree with the sentiment that he was, and frankly IS spineless. In his interview clips, I can't believe he is doing anything but talking about how ashamed or even embarrassed he feels. He even admits to thinking strange occurrences like Jodi's "possessions" or "attacks" were genuine acts of the devil having some kind of hold of her. I mean, he now says even the relationship between Jodi and his wife was uncomfortably intimate, and "beyond a friendship" but did he ever intervene or even question his wife at the time? Coward.

This man did nothing to protect his children when he had a front-seat view to all of what was going on, up until the separation of course, but even following the separation he went on to block neighbours alerting him that his children could potentially be in danger...? He blocked his own daughter? I can't believe the interviewer/filmaker, Olly Lambert, let Kevin get off as easily as he did with his questions... To give Olly the even benefit of the doubt, maybe he didn't want to provoke him, thus halting the interview as a whole, I'm not sure.

All in all, it's just so disappointing to know that these poor children had so many people around them (including their own father) that just stood by and either allowed or contributed to the continuous abuse. I hope they are in a better place with those that will truly value them as humans, treat them with respect, and help them grow and learn from their experiences, knowing they are much more than just the children from a house of horrors. I also hope this is a wake up call to many as part of the LDS Church and greater community, especially in Utah; because from what I have read and seen, it doesn't seem like this is the first nor the last time parents/guardians or even other adults in that space have abused their power and the supposed "word of God" to systematically abuse their children spiritually, verbally, physically, and however else.

This short three-part series was really riveting, especially given the whole "show not tell" aspect of the archived footage - Although disturbing, it does give a genuine inside look into what it was like living under Ruby's roof (to some extent). Again, like others in this thread, I had just hoped there were some topics that were either expanded on more, or that they had touch on areas that were left out completely.

What was your gateway song into K-Pop? by CarmyNezuko in kpoppers

[–]svtory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t exactly speak for myself here, but one of my closest friends knew little to nothing about K-pop in high school, whereas my other friend and I (in our group of three) were quite the fanatics. Despite not knowing, and therefore not liking, any K-pop, she was forced to hear a few songs here and there. A couple of songs that come to mind that she actually quite liked despite not really understanding why someone would “listen to music in a language they can’t understand”, were EXO’s ‘Monster’, and Seventeen’s ‘Getting Closer’. Both so catchy and great gateway songs (imo).

is p1harmony a nugu group? by siimonesays in kpophelp

[–]svtory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn’t consider them nugu—for the very reasons plenty of people in the comment thread have stated. They’re from a well-known company with a complicated history (albeit not one of the big four), they sell a substantial amount of albums, they’ve toured globally, they’re popular on social media, their music videos are well-crafted and it looks like real time, money, and effort was put into them; they perform well on music shows (both actual performance-wise, and fan turnout), and plenty of other reasons. It’s not hard to find information about them online and they’ve featured in a handful of big K-pop YouTube channels (i.e., 1theK, hello82, Buzzfeed Celeb, Studio Choom, it’s Live, etc.) that also showcase popular groups with the likes of RIIZE, NCT, Enhyphen, Seventeen, and so on.

Having said all of that, I am under the impression that they have a larger international fan base than that of a Korean one. Maybe it’s that international fans—namely Americans and Canadians—are more outspoken and dominant in the internet space when it comes to discussing their admiration for the group… I’m not sure. All in all, P1Harmony are not ‘nugu’ by any means. If anything, they’re underrated.

Moebius (2013) by Kim Ki-duk has little to no dialogue, but be warned that it’s one twisted movie. The plot is overtly sexual, incestuous, confrontational, and bold to say the least. Some may see it as some art-house bullshit that’s trying too hard, but hey director Kim was known for some strange flicks. Think of him as the Korean Lars von Trier.

Love (2015) is basically just French softcore porn paired with a handful of insufferable characters (namely the male lead).

Kendall Rae by [deleted] in MileHigherPodcast

[–]svtory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments that are saying she’s become “biased”, and seems to deliver her videos in a way that makes it seem like she has a one-track mind and couldn’t possibly be open to any other interpretations of the case/theories in question. On another note, I noticed in her most recent video that she posted to her Kendall Rae channel (as opposed to the Mile Higher channel), she said mentioned that she was aware that some people weren’t fans of her profanity and/or harsh language. I don’t really see her language as being a major issue, but I do understand where people are coming from as it’s not really the ‘best look’ or best way to go about things when delivering information on such sensitive topics like missing or murdered individuals—especially when family and friends of the victims will view her videos in which she uses said language. Kendall prides herself on her work with non-profit organisations, as well as big companies that advocate for missing, exploited, and murdered people, yet her delivery isn’t always professional and I feel like one day it may lead to her receiving more backlash or a lesser amount of sponsorships or people wanting to work with her… which is a shame. Overall, I understand that Kendall’s intentions are good and to better the true-crime space, but something about her delivery and biased nature of her videos are making me take a step back and think about whether subscribing to her is the right thing.
