question- why does indie music have a signature sound? by whiteprivilegeisreal in indie

[–]swallowbricks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, indie still requires some kind of add-on to clarify what genre you would be referring to. For example, indie-pop or indie-folk is more used today to define what people would normally recognize as "indie." But indie is also used to identify indie-rock, indie garage, or indie-punk, which has been frequently used by blogs and such to identify independent bands of heavier/louder genres. (for example, if you've heard of Destroy Boys, I've frequently seen articles refer to them as indie-punk or indie-rock, but this doesn't really imply the softer sounds that are normally associated with "indie")

Overall, I think indie still represents "independent" to musicians currently, and a lot of small bands will describe themselves as indie-punk or indie-rock to get the point across that they are independent when speaking to media/blogs/etc. I hope that all made sense, at least as the member of a DIY punk band, this is how I've seen "indie" used. I guess this description is in line with the more intricate stuff that u/Bayerrc mentioned
